Tim Leffel is an award winning travel writer, editor and author who has published four previous books on traveling well for less. He is editor of Perceptive Travel, established in 2006, and the Cheapest Destinations Blog, established in 2003. He is frequently quoted in the media as an expert on value travel and living abroad and has appeared in Travel + Leisure, National Geographic Traveler, Outside, Men's Health, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Global Traveler, and more. This is by far the best book on the subject of living abroad

While there are literally hundreds of books about living abroad for less, this one stands out as the best. I've read about 25 other books on the subject, and none come even close to providing the objectivity that this one does.
No doubt, if you've searched the Internet for the best places to live overseas, you've come across the propaganda of the publications from International Living. Even if you somehow avoided their website, virtually every article from other publications and magazines, quotes information from this very misleading source. Unlike International Living, whose primary purpose is to sell seminars promoting a country, 'A Better Life for Half the Price,' provides totally unbiased information, both good and bad about virtually every place in the world that is worth considering as a place to live.
Tim Leffel should be applauded for providing in depth summaries of all of the World's best locations to live, and doing so without an ulterior motive. In addition, he provides an extensive list of additional resources at the end of the book.
At first I was upset that this book wasn't available in a Kindle version, however, I now realize that a paperback edition is more useful. I've highlighted page after page with a yellow marker, as well as placed Post-it notes throughout. While highlighting on a Kindle is easy, I find that having a hard copy of this particular book just makes more sense.
If you're just starting your search for best places to live on a budget, I highly recommend that you purchase this book. Had I done so prior to wasting my money on all of the other books that I bought, I would have saved hundreds of dollars. Whatever you do, don't be mislead by the plethora of information on the Internet from International Living. As mentioned, their goal is to lure you into attending one of their expensive seminars, not to provide you with unbiased, factual information, such as is rendered in this outstanding book.
After reading this book, you'll have a much clearer idea of what countries are worth additional exploration. Than, you can browse Amazon for books that are specific to the country that you have an interest in.

Are you looking to move abroad, and to cut your expenses in the process? Then this is required reading, plain and simple.

This is probably the most in-depth book I've ever read about moving/living abroad, being an expat, and "living the dream," if something like this is your dream. Besides being very informative and well-written, I love the fact that Mr. Leffel doesn't fill his book with false hopes and dreams. Too many authors who write about living abroad act like it's some sort of easy transition and gateway to paradise, with no negatives and no work that needs to be done. The author keeps as far away from that as possible. He's very experienced, having lived all over the world, and knows what the positives and negatives are for the entire lifestyle, as well as for a wide variety of expat locations on all continents. It's a no-nonsense book that readily mentions this lifestyle is not for everyone, and it's not all fun and games. Alas, if you want to do this (as we have), he's clear that you can make it happen and that you can really live a more fruitful life. This is definitely required reading for *anyone and everyone* who is thinking of moving abroad. Mr. Leffel is one of the best expat/travel writers out there; his book is full of essential knowledge and insight to living a better life for half the price.

This book is surprisingly thorough, although nothing can truly cover the world. I like its pros and cons section for each country. And while still somewhat on the sunny side, it is generally candid and lays the facts out instead of sounding like a crazy-happy travel brochure.
