the previous book does not need to be read first in order to enjoy Fox Children

With The Witcher: Volume 2 we have a contained and complete story separate from volume 1; the previous book does not need to be read first in order to enjoy Fox Children. Gamers looking to expand the world beyond The Wild Hunt and Assassins of Kings will find familiar territory and enjoy the story. Those new to the world of the Witcher can also begin with Fox Children since it is a standalone and can serve as a decent introduction to the character. Both the game designer and writer Tobin collaborated and note that the game has many elements drawn from comic/graphic novel conventions and therefore this is a very accessible piece appealing to a wide audience.

Story: The Witcher joins with a dwarf Adaggio to protect a ship's crew attempting to rescue a wealthy Elf's kidnapped daughter. But the task is not so easily accomplished and it will take all of the Witcher's talents and skills in order to survive the illusions and traps set by a vengeful vulpess.

The story is very straightforward but definitely captures the dialogue and personalities from the games (more so than the novels, in which the speech patterns (and often humor) are less defined). Although the author does attempt to bring in some moral complexities, the simplistic nature of the story does result in a pat solution/ending. Perhaps that was the most disappointing aspect of Fox Children since so many of the quests/plots in Witcher involve ambivalence and nuance. There's a lot of padding in the middle that devolved to 'fight monster x then fight monster y' that perhaps pandered a bit too much to the gamers without bringing more to the storyline.

The art is serviceable and the characters look the part. There were some really ugly drawings in there, however, where faces were distorted or simply colored in without any features. The Witcher, especially, ended up being very nebulously defined, often viewed either extreme close up (e.g., cat-like eyeballs) or long shot pullbacks where he's pretty much a lump with a white ponytail. Especially those who recently played the game and have the incredible animation still in their memory might be a bit disappointed as I was by the illustration work on the Witcher himself. That said, the rest of the art was solid and told the story well.

While this is a newbie-friendly self contained story, I did find it a bit bloated and lacking the complexity of a Witcher game subplot. Certainly, the author captured the curt, 'dropped article' dialogue and grounded logic/wisdom of Geralt. As well, the misogynistic "women are insane and especially the ones I'm involved with" is intact here. The author and illustrator know the Witch lore, characters, novels, and games well and have done a decent job of staying true to their source material. And yet, the story does exactly what the Witcher games did not: it gives a fairly straightforward, 'kill the monsters' quest with a happy ending. That's a shame since the Witcher games and novels are about not having pat answers to life's difficulties thrown at Geralt - whose victories are Pyrrhic more often than not.

In all, I am glad I bought it. The physical, soft cover book is beautifully presented and includes artwork from the game as well as covers from the comics. The printing is crisp and the colors rich. But yes, I did hope for more.

The book is a very good comic. If you enjoyed the "House of Glass" previous Witcher Comic, you will like this one. I would recommend.

John Clifford�is an award-winning graphic designer/creative director, and principle at Think Studio, a New York City design firm. His recent projects include collateral for The World Financial Center, the L.L. Bean 100th-anniversary book, web design for Maine Road Management, packaging for Paul Labrecque Haircare, and books on architecture, photography, and popular culture for The Monacelli Press, Yale School of Architecture, and Abrams. Previously, Clifford worked at Doyle Partners, Platinum Design, William Stout Publishers, and Chronicle Books, as well as in marketing and sales in the entertainment industry. Beautifully curated and designed, this book is both informative and inspirational. Understanding the history of contemporary design is essential for anyone entering the field - or with merely an interest in the subject. The great range of work contained in this book serves this purpose perfectly. Concise and accessible, Graphic Icons is an essential addition to any design library. I wish it had existed when I was in school!

Beautifully designed. Contains great recommendations for further exploration. Concise and thoughtful writing that is considerably more personable than a text book.

About the Author
Larry Jeffus is a welder with over 55 years of welding experience, and he has his own well-equipped welding shop. In his welding career he has passed many welding certification tests in a wide variety of processes, positions, and on many different material types and thicknesses. Larry has provided welding and professional consulting services locally, nationally, and internationally to major corporations, small businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges, and individuals. He is a Life Member of the American Welding Society. Larry Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for 12 years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He served as a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helped establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

Serious about welding?

If you are serious about learning how to weld and wish to do it well, then this workbook is necessary. Completing the workbook commits the knowledge in the book to memory. My instructor requires some exercises to be turned in, so buying a used workbook or planning on re-selling this is not practical.

Steeped in modernist ceramic aesthetics, Frans Wildenhain studied under Gerhard Marcks and Max Krehan at the Bauhaus pottery workshop in Dornburg, Germany. There, Wildenhain met another potter, Marguerite Friedlaender, his future wife. Following World War II, Wildenhain emigrated to the U.S. Earning prizes for his art at the 1939 International Exposition in Paris and the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, Wildenhain also received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1958, became a Fellow of the American Crafts Council and his work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Everson Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.This book features archival images as well as more than 150 rich, color photographs of the ceramics exhibited in 2012 at the Rochester Institute of Technology, NY. Six chapters offer contributions to scholarship on the artist, mid-century studio pottery and modern design, monetizing and commercial acceptance of mid-century handcrafted art at an innovative artists' cooperative, university education at the School for American Craftsmen, and an interview with collector Robert Johnson who donated his Wildenhain collection to RIT. The book is an essential document of the exhibition and an excellent reference for those interested in ceramics, crafts, mid-century design and art entrepreneurship.

One of the most aggressive lines against the sicilian

I think that this book is highly reccomended to all players who don't like to simply win a chess game! The lines are analized with clearness taking advantage of what grandmaster practice has done with them. Lane chooses beautiful and instructive games for each line and he gives the strategic plans that are behind any possible continuations (all the notes are strictly connected to this feature). This is very important because this variation doesn't admit any misjudgments and so the moves must be carefully calculated, this is why it's most wiseable to me that you can understand the way you make that move instead of learning the move from a book. This book allows you to enter the secrets of the Fischer-Sozin without putting in your memory a lot of move orders without explanation. The only reason I didn't give 10 rating is that I wanted to see much more games than the 48 analized inside... But I can assure you this number is anyway worth of it!

I don't have much to add to the other review. I will say that I occasionally stop playing 1. e4 all together, because I don't want to face the Sicilian. But this is silly. Why play chess at all if I am scared of certain lines? After all, it's only a game. My point is that when I come back to 1. e4 and try to decide what to play against the Sicilian, I always end up turning to this book by Lane (that is, after I try and drop the Smith-Morra [too gimmicky], the Alapin [too passive], the Grand Prix [too aggressive], and the Closed [too Closed!]. The Bc4 scheme makes a lot of sense, and is consonant with chess principles and chess history (Fischer used it, and he is the closest thing to what Morphy may have been like in the modern era). Excellent book with a good index in the back and nicely produced by Batsford.

The Neverending Story

A history of almost 200 years of political, economic, and military maneuvering between Russia and England over Central Asia, which reads a bit like, as another reviewer has said, today's headlines. It is arranged chronologically and clearly written, although a bit dull; none of the characters, Russian, English, or native rulers, many of whom were rather colorful, come to life. The maps, though small, help make sense of the geography, some of which is still being fought over today. The sad thing is that "spheres of influence" is still a rationale for countries, as Russia takes back the Crimea, which belonged to the Ottoman Empire, and then Russia, and then was fought over between England and Russia, and then became part of the Ukraine, etc. My primary issue with the book is the jingoistic Anglocentric point of view. Granted the book was written by a Brit, but he goes out of his way to paint natives and their rulers as brutal and treacherous, and the Russians as sly, devious, and aggressive. He displays an undeveloped sense of irony because the actions of the English he describes are exactly the same as those of the Russians and, in many cases, the native rulers. Instead of owning people, the empires of those days owned countries.

Lessons for Today

Anyone who thinks we can deal with Afghan warlords might want to read this book. It's a great cautionary tale about the British experience in that country during the 19th century. Part spy story and part history, the book is interesting and it's kind of an eye-opener about how little the culture there has changed.

About the Author
Joyce Trainor moved nine times across the United States by the time she was thirteen. Her teen and young adult years were spent in Arizona, where she moved seven times within that state before relocating to Northern New Mexico in the early eighties. She lives in the Espanola Valley, working and volunteering with various educational and social service agencies. Finally home, she has lived in the same dwelling for over thirty years. This is her first novel.

Survival Story

Joyce Trainor’s “No Handbook for the Homeless” lays out an almost hour-by-hour account of how homeless former teacher Aileen Roark and her big, sweet dog struggle to find food and shelter. The author has a gift for scene and authentic, harrowing detail. She also has an especially deft way with her animal characters, giving them the same respect she gives her humans. When Aileen, having lost her beloved dog, searches at the pound for another, she finds one that “turned her face up toward me using her sad brown eyes to tell me her story. 'I am a good girl. I did what I was told. I was kind to people and never asked much, so how did I end up here abandoned and alone.' I knew that look. It was what I saw every time I looked in a mirror.”
Engrossing story of survival.

Hope in the Face of Adversity

In this novel the reader is taken on a journey of homelessness, the drudgery, the sparseness, the cold, the blazing heat, and hunger, The reader experiences what created the homelessness, for their is always a story, and yet I held hope that the character would find her way.. The homeless characters she meets throughout Albuquerque are in turn caring, lovable, cruel, and desperate. I feel as if I have lived this story through the character and feel even more compassion for the plight of the homeless for having read it.

Great characters, great story, great New Mexico setting

A great story with great characters with many beautiful New Mexico settings. The storyline takes the main character through a series of both heartbreaking and uplifting events that reflect our current human condition. Strongest part of the book are the people-Wizard, Cesar, Father Rico, Billy Dean- that help the main charactrer dig herself out of the hole. A book that leaves you full of hope - should be made into a movie.
