Amazon.com Review

Travel across the country with Laurie Keller's wacky, clever cartoon drawings. Keller brings each state to life and gives them all unique personalities. Take a look at the comic adventures of Vermont as he tries to learn the state abbreviations.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Keller is once again guilty of transporting laughter across state lines in this follow-up to her hit The Scrambled States of America. Who knew that the 50 states were such a bunch of hams? She shows readers the backstage histrionics: California demands to talk to his agent when Georgia gets a bad case of stage fright, and Hawaii doesn't get the answer she seeks when she asks Kansas: Does this grass skirt make my butte look big? But the show must go on—and it does with every possible kind of act, from Minnesota the Magician (who seems to saw South Dakota in half) to the State Impersonators (Tennessee and Wyoming form Oklahoma and then ask, What's up with this handle, anyway? I mean, what am I—a state or a frying pan?). Some fans of the first book may argue that this one isn't as geographically clever—and they could be right. But the snappy dialogue flows effortlessly, the personalities are as winning as ever, and the pictures' energy never flags. It's e pluribus boffo! Ages 4–9. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4—New York wakes up in the middle of the night and shouts, "Hey, everyone—let's have a talent show!" The other states jump right in to prepare and perform their acts. Illustrations and layouts are similar to those in The Scrambled States of America Holt, 1998), with cartoon characters shaped like state maps dancing and prancing on stick legs and wisecracking all over the pages. There's plenty to giggle at: Texas trying to skate under Missouri's Gateway Arch, Pennsylvania playing a "peppy tune" on the Liberty Bell, and California checking in with his agent. Because there are 50 characters, the action can become confusing. It's easy enough to figure out that the "New States on the Block" boy band is made up of states that begin with the word "new," but not as clear why North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Virginia, West Virginia, and Louisiana are members of the Montanettes, a singing group with Vegas-style feathers. There are references to the previous book, so it's helpful to remember that Mississippi and Nevada have fallen in love. Where it is popular, this one will also have fans. It is clever, lightly educational, and hip, but with a slightly weaker premise, it is just a bit more…scrambled.—Ellen Heath, Easton Area Public Library, Easton, PA

I love Laurie Keller
By Kalistah
I purchased Scrambled States of America: Talent Show for my two year old son. I love Laurie Keller, and had previously read Do Unto Otters.

Scrambled States has a brief list of State facts on the inside covers, and I like to use that and the map to help teach my son about the states. Cartoonizing each state into a character makes each state memorable and my son relates to them. He easily identifies Michigan, Oregon, and more thanks to this book. This is a great start for a toddler.

The book is about the different talents some states choose to showcase in a wacky talent show adventure. There is a lot of humor. My son giggles everytime we read it.

This book is a lot of fun to read and it is a great learning tool, both early on and will be over the next few years.

So fun, your kids won't know they are learning!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!!!!!! We checked this book out at the library and decided to just buy it because it's that awesome!! My son just turned five a month ago and this is a perfect introduction to American geography. We read this book at least six times and he memorized more than half the book and can identify a few states! This book is so good, we bought the original and the board game as well.

Latent learning!
By Roxiecub
Wonderful! One of my son's favorites books. He is an advanced reader at four years and loves this one. Such personality! He already knows his states , capitals, and nicknames from this book, the original, and the board game. We bought them together and have had them for about a month. Fun way to learn without realizing it - highly recommend

Paperback and Hardcover aren't the same book
By Joshua
Buyer beware!! The paperback and the hardcover have two completely different set of numbers in them. If you need this for a class, as I'd assume most people buying this book do, keep that in mind. The paperback is a "global edition" while the hardcover isn't.

The Plot to Hack America: How Putin’s Cyberspies and WikiLeaks Tried to Steal the 2016 Election, by Malcolm Nance

In April 2016, computer technicians at the Democratic National Committee discovered that someone had accessed the organization’s computer servers and conducted a theft that is best described as Watergate 2.0. In the weeks that followed, the nation’s top computer security experts discovered that the cyber thieves had helped themselves to everything: sensitive documents, emails, donor information, even voice mails.

Soon after, the remainder of the Democratic Party machine, the congressional campaign, the Clinton campaign, and their friends and allies in the media were also hacked. Credit cards numbers, phone numbers, and contacts were stolen. In short order, the FBI found that more than twenty-five state election offices had their voter registration systems probed or attacked by the same hackers.

Western intelligence agencies tracked the hack to Russian spy agencies and dubbed them the CYBER BEARS. The media was soon flooded with the stolen information channeled through Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. It was a massive attack on America but the Russian hacks appeared to have a singular goal—elect Donald J. Trump as president of the United States.

New York Times bestselling author of Defeating ISIS and the forthcoming Hacking ISIS and career intelligence officer Malcolm Nance’s fast paced real-life spy thriller takes you from Vladimir Putin’s rise through the KGB from junior officer to spymaster-in-chief and spells out the story of how he performed the ultimate political manipulation—convincing Donald Trump to abandon seventy years of American foreign policy including the destruction of NATO, cheering the end of the European Union, allowing Russian domination of Eastern Europe, and destroying the existing global order with America at its lead.

The Plot to Hack America is the thrilling true story of how Putin’s spy agency, run by the Russian billionaire class, used the promise of power and influence to cultivate Trump as well as his closest aides, the Kremlin Crew, to become unwitting assets of the Russian government. The goal? To put an end to 240 years of free and fair American democratic elections.

Praise for Malcolm Nance's New York Times bestselling Defeating ISIS:

“I really think the [2016 Presidential] candidates ought to read this.... You should buy this book.” —RACHEL MADDOW, The Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC

“A comprehensive, authoritative, and detailed compendium on the Islamic State (ISIS).”—Perspectives on Terrorism

“In his detailed and informed study Nance argues that, in effect, America's War on Terror created a new breed of vicious terrorists who wear the mask of Islam like actors in a Kabuki theatre while carrying out horrifically un-Islamic acts.” —RICHARD ENGEL, Chief Foreign Correspondent, NBC News, from his foreword

ON RUSSIAN HACKING

“Putin and the leaders throughout the world have no respect for our country
anymore and they certainly have no respect for our leader.” —DONALD TRUMP, Republican presidential candidate and president of the Trump Organization

“We know that Russian intelligence services hacked into the DNC and we know
that they arranged for a lot of those emails to be released. . . . But I think laying out the facts raises serious issues about Russian interference in our elections, in our democracy.”—HILLARY CLINTON, Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State

“What we do know is that the Russians hack our systems. Not just government
systems, but private systems.”—PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

“As an American double agent who worked against Russian intelligence in the US, this book shows how Putin’s spies stop at nothing.”—NAVEED JAMALI, former double agent and author of How to Catch a Russian Spy

RUSSIA’S RESPONSE

“I wouldn’t know anything about it. You know, there are so many hackers today and they work with such finesse, planting a trail where and when they need . . . . It’s difficult to trace, if even possible. . . . The important thing here is what the public was shown. . . . One shouldn’t draw the public attention from the core of the issue by replacing it with secondary details like who did it.”—VLADIMIR PUTIN

“Overall, we still see attempts to use—manically use—the Russian issue during the US electoral campaign. . . . The absurd claims were immediately refuted directly by a presidential candidate’s family.”—DMITRY PESKOV, Russian government spokesman

America Under Attack
By Randolph Eck
I could tell by looking at the reviews (the typical rightward pointing U-shape of the review bars, either mostly 5 stars or 1 star) that this was a very polarizing book. Unfortunately, it is difficult to use many of the reviews in such a case to determine the merit of a book, since many probably did not read much of the book if at all. I can see why this is the case, since the book paints a negative view of Donald Trump. I try to keep my reviews unfettered by a predetermined bias.

That said, Nance discusses the DNC hack that began around March or April of 2016. Metadata left behind, led to WikiLeaks and a Russian intelligence organization which is a conglomeration of cyber spying groups codenamed Cyber Bears. It appears this organization consists of the FSB (former KGB), the GRU ( Russian Military intelligence), and criminal cyberwarfare subcontractors. The author then proceeds to give us a history of Russia and its intelligence organizations. He notes that “This deep history of espionage, intrigue, and murder shaped Vladimir Putin’s worldview toward the West.” To Putin, the ideal situation would be an economically crippled America, withdrawn from military adventure abroad and NATO, and a leadership installed that is friendly to Russia. In chapter five, the author discusses Russia’s new model of coordinating all aspects of intelligence, propaganda, and cyber operations, which he calls “hybrid warfare.” We learn about advanced persistent threats or APTs, which are “a description of malware toolkits used by hackers.” These hacker groups have been active in other countries as well, such as Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, and others. Nance formulates a connection from these cyber groups to WikiLeaks, calling WikiLeaks Russia’s intelligence laundromat. In the current election, neither Assange nor Putin curry any favor of Clinton making them perfect partners united against this candidate.

The timing of these events is obviously designed to bolster Trump in the polls. For example, we have the leaks prior to the Democratic National Convention which ended up pitting Bernie supporters against Hillary supporters; after Trump’s speech on immigration after the Mexico visit, DCCC documents from Pelosi’s computer on immigration and other items were released; within days of the NY Times stating that anything Trump said needed fact-checking, the Cyber Bears hacked the news organization; a similar thing occurred with Newsweek, and we could go on.

Nance concludes by saying that, “Russian use of cyber weapons to perform criminal acts and damage our electoral process was intended to remove faith in America itself.” He sees politics itself under attack due to hacking and demagoguery. We have to wonder if an attack with a “weapon of Mass Disruption” has yet to occur. It’s all quite sobering to think about.

An important book. Just read it and other info on this serious matter. Be informed. Doubters here reinforce the Russian line.
By GreenEarthgirl888
I was a bit skeptical when I picked up this book but quickly got engrossed in the details it presents about Russian spy craft, Putin, Trump's extensive Russian dealings and alliances, and the elaborate procedures, including hacking, that make up this ongoing attempt to subvert our elections - to potentially get Trump in - who espouses unwittingly a soft embrace of Russian aims, and to undermine the world's view of our democracy as disorganized and corrupt. Read the NY Times opinion piece of October 30th by Gary Kasparov about how corrupt the Russian electoral process is - an example being when he ran as opponent of Putin. Disgusting! This is an important book because it educates the reader about how the Russian spy apparatus works on all levels to undermine opponents. It shows Putin to be the brutal manipulator and former KGB chief he is. It is also shocking to see how much Trump has worked with Russian oligarchs and been plied with praise and money contracts - something he is especially responsive to. If you value your democratic system, read this book! Oh, and I'm sure some reviewers will trot out elaborate comments bout how this book is fluff, is based on heresy, and on and on. Read the book and you'll see how Russian Black propaganda by their experts, and those who feel some sympathy try to muddy the waters, make you confused, unsure. That is their job! So read the book and other information on this manipulation of a candidate, hack of our party system, and cynical Russian attempt to control our democracy and our country. It is for real Americans. I read the other reviews with interest and saw a few that toe the Russian line well -just as we expect their disinformation efforts to work. Don't bother Americans. Go to sleep. Let us do our work. Sorry, but after reading the book, you appreciate the efforts of Russian influencers to soften this story and try to make it go away. Putin is watching carefully. Now is the time for us to act.

The Moon in the Palace (The Empress of Bright Moon Duology Book 1), by Weina Dai Randel

There is no easy path for a woman aspiring to power

A concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the Emperor's attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. Young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the Emperor a gift he can never forget.

Mei's intelligence and curiosity, the same traits that make her an outcast among the other concubines, impress the Emperor. But just as she is in a position to seduce the most powerful man in China, divided loyalties split the palace in two, culminating in a perilous battle that Mei can only hope to survive.

In the breakthrough first volume in the Empress of Bright Moon duology, Weina Dai Randel paints a vibrant portrait of ancient China—where love, ambition, and loyalty can spell life or death—and the woman who came to rule it all.

From School Library Journal
The first of a duology based on the life of China's Empress Wu (624–705). Mei is her doting father's favorite, until his sudden death forces her family out of their luxurious life to live with uncaring relatives. Summoned to serve the emperor at 13, she wants to appeal on behalf of her family but is quickly thrust into a world of palace intrigue and treachery. Despite being trained in The Art of War, Mei is unprepared to chart this complex world. Her successful navigation owes much to good mentoring and being in the right place at the right time. The mutual attraction she has for the emperor's eighth son, their clandestine relationship, and Mei's conflicting desires to follow her heart or save her family further complicate matters. Randel excels at the twists, turns, machinations, and alliances of the palace ladies and greater political forces, creating a page-turning volume as Mei learns to navigate the harshness of both worlds. A compelling look at the outside forces and inner determination that shape the protagonist to become a formidable force in her own right, painting a very different portrait of a women than we saw in Shan Sa's Empress or unflattering depictions in the histories written by her political detractors. Luckily, readers will not have to wait to see the rest of Mei's story, as The Empress of Bright Moon is already available. VERDICT Full of politics and intrigue, this is a fascinating must-read for fans of historical fiction and romance.—Jennifer Rothschild, Arlington Public Library, Arlington VA

Review
"This eloquent first novel follows the life of a young girl during China’s Tang dynasty (618–907). When Mei is five years old, a monk foretells that her destiny is to be both the mother of emperors and an emperor in her own right. Aspiring to have his daughter brought to the palace, Mei’s father educates her in poetry, history, mathematics, calligraphy, and even Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. All seems lost after his sudden death, but fate will not be ignored. Thirteen-year-old Mei is chosen as one of the 15 Selects to serve in the Inner Court. She will need to draw on all she learned from her father to survive the machinations of the imperial court and to earn favor with the emperor. Mei finds herself in danger, both from other women and her involvement with a boy named Pheasant. This is the first book in a duology recounting the life of Empress Wu (624–705), China’s only ruling female emperor. VERDICT This story of a woman who made her own destiny and has been often vilified is a must for historical fiction fans, especially those fascinated by China’s glorious past." -- Library Journal, STARRED Review

“Like fragile yet strong silk threads, Randel’s beautifully composed debut ensnares readers in the dynamic story of the young girl who would become Empress of the Bright Moon. Randel’s novel is an impressive tale of lethal court intrigue that is seductive and alluring. It is a story of one woman’s rise to power, but also of the relationships between the women of the palace. Readers will be transported by the colorful, fairy-tale-like story.”— RT Book Reviews, Top Pick, 4-1/2 stars

"Lyrical and intriguing." -- Bobbi Dumas, Kirkus Reviews

“Mei gives life to this richly detailed novel. She is adventuresome, intelligent, hardworking and a risktaker.” – The Dallas Morning News

"The real triumph of The Moon in the Palace is how Randel succeeds in showing court politics exclusively through female eyes, and how every decision and subsequent action, success, and failure are skillfully plotted like a chess match by the palace women... Magical." -- Washington Independent Book Review of Books

“Randel brilliantly evokes Mei’s many struggles in THE MOON IN THE PALACE. .. The author also makes the intricacies of the imperial court easily accessible to readers new to ancient China.”
– BookReporter

"The premise might be familiar from similar blockbusters such as Memoirs of a Geisha, but Randel knows how to exploit it for narrative tension... the novel explores intriguing feminist terrain."
– South China Morning Post

“I absolutely loved Weina Dai Randel’s The Moon in the Palace, which is a truly immersive experience and a rare and beautiful treasure. All I want now is to read the next novel!”

- C.W. Gortner, bestselling author of The Queen's Vow

"It's subject, Empress Wu, was one of the most fascinating, characters in Chinese history...
Randel writes with a fresh, poetic style, bringing to life a time
remote from our own, yet filled with the same intrigues, power struggles, -- and love affair. For those confined to a claustrophobic existence in the palace, to offend the wrong person was to risk a horrible death. Yet strong women could bend the intrigues to their own benefit -- if they dared. This is history but also a stay-up-all-night read." - Mingmei Yip, author of The Nine Fold Heaven and Song of the Silk Road

"The Moon in the Palace is a colorful and vibrant journey into the grandeur of the Tang Dynasty. Weina Randel weaves a captivating tale about the intrigues of the inner court through the eyes of the woman who would become the most infamous Empress in Chinese history, finding a human story of love and hope amidst bloodshed and treachery. I couldn't stop reading this exciting debut novel." - Jeannie Lin, USA Today bestselling author of The Lotus Palace

"With fresh, lyrical prose and a true storyteller's flair, in her novel The Moon in the Palace, Weina Dai Randel brings 7th century China to vibrant life. Through the eyes of Mei, a name meaning simply "Sister," given to the middle daughter of the household of her birth, we are submerged into intrigue of the Imperial court, where wives and concubines fight for positions of power beside the emperor, and where men fight to take the emperor's throne. A story of courage and daring, in The Moon in the Palace, a girl without a name takes her destiny into her own hands. A shining jewel of a novel." - Christy English, author of The Queen's Pawn and To Be Queen

"With elegant, modern prose and vivid details, Randel's gorgeous debut novel seductively pulls back the curtain to reveal the heartbreaking world of harem politics in Tang Dynasty China. Exploring the early years of the legendary Empress Wu when she was still a concubine struggling to survive the whims of the man who ruled her, the book's brave and clever heroine finds herself at the center of intrigue and civil war. This is a page turner that will transport you in time and place. Bravo!" - Stephanie Dray, author of Lily of the Nile

"Mei is a triumph of intelligence and passion, cunning and courage. Randel has provided a strong cast of supporting characters, successfully resisting stereotypes of eunuchs and concubines..." -- Janie Chang, Author of Three Souls

For lovers of The Red Tent
By KWCraft
I adored this novel of ancient China in the same way I loved Anita Diamond's The Red Tent, both for the evocative language and the story of a time when lovers and wives were sisters, and jealousies and scheming were rampant. Even when women had few rights—I would not want to be one of them!—this story shows its female characters were not powerless, and somehow found the inner strength to improve their lot in life. The book has left me thinking about marrying for love vs marrying for influence, and how each affects our lives. The Chinese folk wisdom, superstitions, and quotes from The Art of War scattered throughout enriched the story. I'm eager to read the second book, taking a break only because I don't want it to be over! Highly recommend.

Ancient China Brought to Life
By Barbara C.
If you enjoy good, solid historical fiction based on facts, then this book is for you! It's full of interesting details about 7th century Chinese court life, dress, food, customs and political intrigue as depicted by this talented author. I do agree with another reviewer that the cover is disappointing and gives the impression of a light and frivolous historical romance, which this book is not. It kept me turning the pages and looking forward to the second book in this two-volume set. It's a great trip back in time to visit and appreciate a very different culture.

The making of an Empress.
By Kindle Customer
This book is actually book one of two novels about the life and times of the first and only female Emporer of China, known as Emporer Wu. It really is fascinating to see her rise to supreme power in China from the beginning when she was taken into the palace as one of the Emporer's fifteen fresh new concubines, as a reward for the service her family did to hide and save the dynasty from extinction during a time of resurrection, a period of great peril. One begins to see that it is a strict hierarchy of women in the palace, with the new girls being little more than servants to those who make it to the top, primarily for concieving and bearing a healthy baby boy to the emporer or one of his Princes(sons). Emporer Wu's rise to power is both interesting and unconventional. It is a factual story worth both the time and cost of the two volumn tale. Kathy R. Blackman

This Elementary Surveying: An Introduction to Geomatics, Tenth Edition has been updated to reflect the changing nature of modern surveying practice—currently often referred to as "geomatics." Since this new term is now generally accepted in English-speaking countries worldwide, and is consistent with modern practice as currently evolving in the United States, it is an appropriate addition to the book's title. It is hoped this new edition will not only serve the needs of its traditional surveying and engineering users, but that it will also be suitable for the expanding audience of spatial data users in various other disciplines.

Written primarily for freshman and sophomore students at the college level, the authors have endeavored to present a readable text that presents basic concepts and practical material in each of the areas fundamental to modern surveying (geomatics) practice. Although the book is elementary, its depth and breadth also make it ideal for self study. This tenth edition includes more than 400 figures and illustrations to help clarify discussions, and numerous example problems are worked to illustrate computational procedures.

The order of chapters in the book has been reorganized to better accommodate schedules followed in most surveying laboratories, particularly those in northern climates. Thus, the material on leveling has been presented ahead of distance measurement by taping and electronic methods. Discussions of total station instruments and angle measurements follow these topics. Recognizing the increasing importance of the global positioning system (GPS), this subject has been ;.moved forward in the chapter sequence to follow total station instruments and o; angle measurements. Also the GPS coverage has been expanded into two chapters—Chapter 13 introduces the principles of GPS operation, and Chapter 14 discusses field and office procedures in using the equipment. The subjects of leasts-quares adjustments and coordinate geometry have been upgraded and moved from the appendix into separate chapters in the main text. This is consistent with the increasing importance of these two topics, which have become so vital in connection with both GPS and geographic information systems (GIS).

In keeping with the goal of providing an up-to-date presentation of surveying equipment and procedures, total stations are stressed as the instruments for making angle and distance measurements. Transits and theodolites, which are now only rarely used in practice, are just briefly introduced in the main body of the text. Similarly, automatic levels are now the dominant instruments for elevation determination, and accordingly their use is stressed. Dumpy levels, which nowadays are seldom used, are only briefly mentioned in the main text. However, for those who still use these instruments, they are covered in more detail in Appendix A.

In addition to the major changes noted above, other additions, revisions, and modifications have been made throughout the book. These include the following: A new section on surveying safety has been added, and the use of metric units has been expanded in discussion, in example problems, and in after-chapter homework problems. The latest versions of surveying equipment are presented, and include such devices as digital levels, reflectorless EDM instruments, laser alignment equipment, digital cameras and scanners. Discussion of metric stationing has been expanded within the topics of profile leveling, horizontal and vertical curves, and construction surveying. The material on state plane coordinates has been updated, and the chapter on control surveying has been substantially revised and expanded to present some introductory concepts of geodesy, and also provide greater depth of coverage on datums and reference coordinate systems. The coverage of condominium surveys has been expanded in the chapter on boundary surveys. In the chapter on photogrammetry, modern procedures and equipment have been presented, including the latest developments in softcopy photogrammetry and digital orthophoto production. Discussions on interfacing an aerial camera and GPS equipment in the aircraft to supplement ground control, and new airborne laser mapping systems are also presented. The chapter on GIS has been revised and updated. Website addresses that enable students to obtain additional information on many different topics are given throughout the book. Also, the bibliographies that follow each chapter have been updated.

A compact disc containing many useful computer programs accompanies the book. The CD has its own documentation in the form of help- and sample-data files. The disk contains programs for traverse computations for polygon, link, and radial traverses; area calculations; astronomical azimuth reduction; two-dimensional coordinate transformations; horizontal and vertical curve computations; and least-squares adjustments. It also contains trial versions of field-to-finish software.

As with past editions, this text continues to emphasize the theory of errors in surveying work. At the ends of most chapters common errors and mistakes related to the topics covered are listed so that students will be reminded to exercise caution in all of their work. Practical suggestions resulting from the authors' many years of experience are interjected throughout the text. More than 1000 after-chapter problems are presented to give instructors a wide choice in making assignments. A solution's manual is available to instructors who adopt the book.

surveying : The foundations of surveying explained.
By Jonathan Macrae
Surveying is the foundation of all of civilisations. The world would not be the same without the methods of surveying used by proffessionals.
This book was an essential refference during my study at university and is still used in my professional carrer.
From the first page you will be learning varrious ellements of surveying. The explination of fundumental elements of surveying methods and the changes to surveying caused by technology are explained at the start to give a foundation from which to work from. The different types of surveying is explained in good detail covering the concepts of bearings, angle measurement and lots of others. The covering of work related area's and problems are discussed and covered. This includes curves and roads, mapping and photogrammetry along with sections relating to area and volume determination.
There is numerous pictures, illustrations and diagrams used to show the equipment and show the concepts covered.
If I was starting my education in surveying or wishing to have a good refference then this should be reccomended as a text worth holding in your library.

Good for students, useless for real world application
By Middy
I bought this when I was running multiple survey crews over the course of 8 years. I found that it wound up serving as a paper weight or a door stop more often then not. With the high tech stuff we used to layout sites, we didn't need a book that spend 60% of it's space trying to teach super complex mathematics. Most of what this book is trying to teach is done in every single surveying tool either automatically, or by inputting a few settings in something like autocad or Terramodel.

I was the supervisor of numerous college kids just coming out of survey programs in NC State, or Wake Tech, and the poor guys didn't have a clue. They could tell me how to calculate various things on paper, but real world application they had no idea. This book would have been better off teaching more about the equipment and techniques used, instead of trying to do what it did.

It'd be like taking a class entitled "Introduction to Windows 7" and they spent 90% of the class trying to teach you to write/compile the computer code yourself.
