About the Author
Saadia Faruqi is a Pakistani American writer with expertise in cultural diversity, interfaith dialogue and Muslim American issues. She writes regularly for a number of nonfiction publications including State of Formation, The Islamic Monthly and Tikkun Daily. She is also the editor of the Interfaith Houston blog and Blue Minaret literary magazine. As president of Faruqi & Associates, a writing and editing firm, she works with nonprofit and corporate clients around the world. Brick Walls is her first fictional short story collection. She lives in Houston, Texas with her husband and two small children.

Fresh Perspectives & Beautiful Messages

I like that Saadia takes risks. She offers an eye-opening perspective of a young man recruited to become a suicide bomber; a vivacious girl determined to play the male-dominated sport of cricket; and a revolutionary musician who performs to spite the Taliban. Every viewpoint this book puts forth is fresh, different, and worth knowing.

Saadia's most compelling writing technique is her knack for tension. She has this way of slipping in little hints - a detail that you might overlook or think nothing of - then wrapping everything back full circle. There were times I gasped, "No!" as I realized the foreshadowing from three pages ago had come back, and something terrible was about to happen. She pulls you in consciously and meticulously - with every detail, she gets you to love or sympathize with her characters and feel invested in their futures, fragile as they are.

If I have one wish for this book, it's that I want it to show more than explain, especially when it comes to the deep emotions each protagonist experiences. Saadia sets up each story with so much excellent tension, and I want to see the characters react instead of being told how they feel - then again, I'm an analytical reader and prefer to read between the lines, which isn't the case for everyone. Style preferences aside, there is much depth here to dissect.

As an American reader, I was grateful for the opportunity to explore these perspectives and learn more about a place that US news typically doesn't empathize with. Yet it's critical to acknowledge how many of our problems, hopes, dreams, loves, and passions parallel each other. That is the importance of world literature and this book: to let us hear these voices and feel their existence, no matter what physical distance separates us. Beyond the political critiques, Saadia hits on something even more important and memorable, at least for me: the shared beauty and common kindness of humanity.

Optimism and Hope

The stories in this book filled me with so many emotions, but I mainly came away with optimism and hope. The characters and their situations, in many ways, are universal. That they are Pakistanis dealing with a world turned upside-down by religious extremism, political corruption, war, poverty or violence makes me think twice about my preconceptions. Most of the stories were gut-wrenching or heartbreaking from my Western perspective, but they all expanded my Weltanschauung in some way. Each story is completely different, but each illustrates a facet of Pakistani life and the good and bad of the people who live there. Each story ends in hope, whether for a better life, a better understanding, a new start--the characters find a new path. The writing is wonderful and evocative of life in that part of the world. I know I will be re-reading these stories over time, even though they are unforgettable.

Inspiring Read!

I loved these stories. I love how Saadia Faruqi portrayed so many diverse characters, yet how they all hailed from Pakistan. If you've been to Pakistan, you know how many different social circles, classes, and people they are. Her writing is honest and thought-provoking. Emotional and touching. (I especially loved Nida's story and Farzana's and Lubna's story) A must-read for anyone! Gives a good insight into the subtleties and resilience of Pakistani society. Great read!

About the Author
Dr Jin Li is tenured Associate Professor of Education and Human Development at Brown University. Her research examines different cultural learning models and how such culturally based models shape children's learning beliefs and achievement. She collaborates with researchers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, the UK, Germany, Israel and the United States. Dr Li has published in leading journals such as American Psychologist, the Journal of Educational Psychology, Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Ethos and Cognition and Emotion, among others.

Soulful and Insightful!

As I read this wonderful book I learned something new about my field, education, on just about every page. I often cried because I saw such beauty in these fundamental touchstones of learning. Professor Li has such a clearheaded view of what education is all about, and how a "heart and mind for wanting to learn" is created. This book is a very gentle answer to the "Tiger Mom's" stridency regarding the learning virtues (how do you inculcate a passion for hard work, dedication, endurance of hardship?) but the excellent research in the book emphasizes the steps taken by parents and society in both the U.S. and Asia to understand the idea of excellence and the steps one must take to get there. I believe that every teacher and every parent will benefit from reading it.

Cultural Foundations of Learning

Jin Li's book is a fascinating read and her comparison of East Asian and Western cultures through the teachings of Confucius and Socrates is insightful. Her research is thorough and her outcomes are informative. As citizens of this world, we have much to understand about culture, and Li has created a unique path upon which to travel. As a teacher, parent, and grandparent of a four-year-old of Italian-American and Chinese-American cultures, I find this book invaluable. Cultural Foundations of Learning is certain to find a permanent spot in both my home and school library collection.

INVALUABLE FOR ALL TEACHERS TODAY

Several years ago, I was invited to teach acting theory to animation students in China, and it did not take long for me to realize that my style of teaching was not working, nor were the students displaying a firm grasp of the ideas. Something was being lost in translation and, ever since, I have looked for academic verification of what I was experiencing. Jin Li, in her book "Cultural Foundations of Learning" is providing an invaluable resource. Any teacher who has first or second generation Chinese students will find Ms. Jin extremely helpful.
She first sets the stage for learning in the west versus the east, delving into the powerful influence of Confucius on learning style over there and Aristotle over here. Then she starts digging deeply, getting into family dynamics and sense of life, the underlying rationale for learning. Then she circles back and covers the nature of human learning on a broad scale, the stuff underneath the cultural influences.
Jin Li is a scholar, not an entertainer, and this book is not subway reading. She takes time to explain the challenges of translation between Chinese and English. She references everything, coming as close to being definitive on her subject as possible. Personally, I appreciate this book. It is directly helpful to me, and I enthusiastically recommend it to all teachers in the global classroom.

A Gift for the whole Family

There's a lot to like about The Expectant Dad's Handbook. As a Relationship Counsellor, I particularly appreciate Dean's tips on how husbands can respond supportively to their wives concerns, "just telling her 'not to worry' is really not going to help: reassure her", and "don't try to solve or fix the problem (this is a classic male reflex...just be there to listen". In the postnatal section, I love: "Don't suffer 'back-to-work amnesia...it's too easy to fall into the trap of thinking 'life is back to normal' because you are back into your familiar routine...Mum is probably doing now on her own what you had both been doing up to this point...".

The book addresses the normal and common anxieties, fears and questions that expectant fathers have - a vital part of the parenthood process as being unprepared and experiencing feelings that remain unspoken can impact the labour and also have a tendency to trip up parents in different ways down the track. Dean also validates a new Dad's feelings of jealousy and exclusion, providing advice for how to manage these feelings to they don't fester.

importantly, for the whole family, the book also encourages bonding between dad and baby and why it's important for baby's development, for dad's confidence and for the relationship between partners.

Monsieur by Emma Becker will strangle you into its story of erotic passion that started as a young woman's naive and rebellious curiosity that slowly and thickly becomes a lethal, emotional, and lustful obsession.

It's a story of 20-something-year-old Ellie, a "nymphet," of who she describes in the fictional work, "Lolita" by Nabakov--the title, too, is the opening sentence of the first chapter of the book, which should elicit or at least allude to the passion and erotica to come in the novel (no pun intended--well... maybe a little)--and her all-consuming affair with her married lover, a man twenty-five years her senior who she affectionately refers to as, Monsieur.

And while the name in itself, "Monsieur," denotes a sense of maturity, propriety, or even a formal politeness or regality; the character referred to as "Monsieur," is anything but (again, no pun intended and yet, you will need to read the book to understand exactly what I mean--the word "arse" is not only repeated numerous times in the text, but is a focus of delight and fascination by the perverse and lustful character of Monsieur).

This is no light romance of youthful fancy and sentimental imaginings. Readers of innocent and inexperienced youth, the blushing, shy, and embarrassed prudes of moral superiority and those who detest or fear sexual deviancy should not read this book. The context of Monsieur and Ellie's affair is sordid, crude, and highly brazen. Like the book. Like the narrative.

WHY do you compare this book with Fifty Shades of Grey??
That's an aberration.
Emma Becker's story was written before FSoG and this is a story which did happen in Emma's life, FOR REAL. That's the big difference!
Fifty Shades of Grey is a fake romance story and what I like to call pornography for virgins while MONSIEUR was written by a young student in French literature who was living a genuine and unique love story with an older man. They share a true passion for erotic literature (you can find strong references).
Her style is very dense, rich, poetic and raw.
E.L.James' style is poor, repetitive and boring (with a ridiculous obsession with luxury).
I read MONSIEUR in French (as a French) and I was bewitched by this book and the uniqueness of this true story.

Why so unfair with this book? There is no link between MONSIEUR and FSoG.
The first one is true literature with a solid style while the second is a story for young women who do NOT care about the quality of the writing.

Heart breaking

I randomly stumbled across this book and it became a firm favourite. I don't believe it's anything like Fifty Shades - as entertaining as Fifty Shades was, it would be an insult to Monsieur to compare the two.

Monsieur is incredibly well written in the sense that you are able to feel every emotion of the narrator. When her heart breaks, your heart will break too. There is a grittiness to the book which will stay with you.

I have recommend this book to many people and continue to do so

Currently, there is a great demand for laboratory managers, with a national vacancy rate of 15%. The rapidly changing laboratory environment is constantly responding to diverging trends in healthcare. This mandates the requirement for effective management. Laboratory managers will need to create new solutions to today's problems. This book is designed to give a problem-based approach to teaching the principles of laboratory management. The focus is to present underlying managerial concepts and then assist the learner in the successful application of theoretical models to real-life situations. Each chapter includes one or more illustrative cases to present a management problem followed by thought-provoking questions to stimulate the learners critical thinking skills. In addition, each chapter contains an outline and educational objectives that can be used in teaching. Internet references and website resources permit the learner to acquire advanced and current information in each of the major topic areas. Problem-based learning activities are listed at the end of each chapter to serve as a guide for instruction and reinforcement of the content presented. Seventeen chapters are divided into five major areas of management: Basic Principles and Organizational Structure, Human Resources, Finance, Operations and Strategies for Career Success. Unique to this book is a chapter in education and training and a glossary of key terms. This new text on laboratory management will redefine the standard as both a teaching and reference text. The Best Book on Laboratory Management

I had to take a lab management course during the summer semester for my Master's program, and Denise Harmening's "Laboratory Management: Principles and Processes" is perhaps the most thorough textbook out there about the subject. I don't have any real complaints about the book itself, except for the fact that I wish there were some color photographs in it as well as less complex diagrams. But other than that, the book handles the major tenets of laboratory management quite nicely.

I got this book in preparation for the HTL exam as it is one of the recommended books to use as a study aide. I opened it one time and did not find ay of the information useful or helpful. Definitely not worth it.

`This book landed on my desk this morning and I just had to include it! It is aimed at LMs, TAs and teachers and is a really useful resource. It comes with a CD ROM (Adobe Acrobat needed) and is part of Lucky Duck Publications, which is well-known for producing quality resources in the field of emotional literacy. There are thirteen chapters on: Emotional Intelligence, Self-Esteem, Anger Management, Bereavement, Self-harm, Drug Awareness, Bullying, Behaviour Change, Transition, Attendance, School Refusal and Punctuality, Revisions and Friendship.

Many of you will recognise these themes as areas in which you work and may already have resources for these areas but these are conveniently put together in one book. It is aimed at pupils at the upper end of KS2 up to KS4. Each chapter contains information around each topic, plus photocopiable worksheets such as emotions cards, stories, ideas for games and activities and links to websites. Most of these can be adapted to suit the needs of different schools and to facilitate working within the school's policies. `This book landed on my desk this morning and I just had to include it! It is aimed at LMs, TAs and teachers and is a really useful resource. It comes with a CD ROM (Adobe Acrobat needed) and is part of Lucky Duck Publications, which is well-known for producing quality resources in the field of emotional literacy. There are thirteen chapters on: Emotional Intelligence, Self-Esteem, Anger Management, Bereavement, Self-harm, Drug Awareness, Bullying, Behaviour Change, Transition, Attendance, School Refusal and Punctuality, Revisions and Friendship.

Many of you will recognise these themes as areas in which you work and may already have resources for these areas but these are conveniently put together in one book. It is aimed at pupils at the upper end of KS2 up to KS4. Each chapter contains information around each topic, plus photocopiable worksheets such as emotions cards, stories, ideas for games and activities and links to websites. Most of these can be adapted to suit the needs of different schools and to facilitate working within the school's policies. I would especially recommend this book to people who are new to these roles or who are setting up emotional literacy groups within schools for the first time, but established groups would also find them useful' - Teaching Assistant News

About the Author
Kathy Hampson completed her PhD at Leeds University in 2012, under the supervision of Professor Adam Crawford and Dr Emma Wincup. She�worked full time for the Youth Offending Service during her studies, writing several books on working with young people in this time. She�left Leeds to become the North Wales Resettlement Broker Co-ordinator in 2013.
