About the Author
Annie Proulx is the author of eight books, including the novel The Shipping News and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner award. Her story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in The New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Her most recent novel is Barkskins. She lives in Seattle.

Originally published in THE NEW YORKER and then as part of the collection CLOSE RANGE, Annie Proulx's short story packs a punch. Cowboys Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar find love or something like it watching over a herd of sheep one summer on Wyoming's Brokeback Mountain. Their lives diverge and intersect again and again as they simultaneously resist and are drawn into a doomed, impossible romance. Campbell Scott's clear reading puts Proulx's beautiful and harsh language front and center. The story is mostly straight narration, but there are a few chances for dialogue, and Scott gives the various characters subtle Western shading, with a gentle drawl for Jack and a gravelly growl for Ennis. It's a timeless story that stands up to repeated listening and will stay with listeners long after they've finished the hour-long CD. I found this particular story very sad. Jack Twist was the more joyful of the ...

I had never seen the movie, nor read this, but do remember all the media hype when the movie was released almost 10 years ago. I was looking for something different to read and chose this. This book is 55 pages, and just a darling little thing. I read this in no time at all. The writing of Proulx is exquisite. She is a gifted storyteller and I will pursue more of her work. I found this particular story very sad. Jack Twist was the more joyful of the two men. Ennis Del Mar seemed very rough hewn, hugely conflicted and much more tortured than Jack. I also liked reading about the ranching, Western lifestyle, since it is foreign to my experience.There were no winners in this tale, yet, ultimately a very satisfying book. I hate giving spoilers, but if you haven't read this you won't be let down one bit. I watched the movie after finishing the book and the casting was superb. Ledger & Gyllenhaal were superb as Jack & Ennis.

I love this story so much that when I bought this story 8 or 9 years before the movie. Made me thing about love in such a different way. I am so grateful to what Annie wrote this story so long ago; and Ang Li for directing this movie/story. If there is by chance a continuing saga to this story in some way. This book and Movie is a true classic which has open the door for so many other gay classic love stories, but this is only one original. "I wish I knew how to quit you". I gave first copy of this book to my best friend, he never gave it back.

Just amazing - read it!

This is a story to be savored and read many times for the skill of the writer, in which there is no dispute - but also for the story ... so sad that these two characters could not just live their lives as who they really were. Annie Proulx takes us there ... into the belly of the beast and exposes it all. It is an incredible story told with the skill of a true artist. A winner for sure!

Great book, useless for Kindle (for PC app)

As a beginner in BPMN principles, I found this book VERY helpful. BUT:
NOT for Kindle (PC app), the diagram images are practically UNREADABLE. Zoom feature is not supported, you will have to be in a distance closer than 5 cms in order to get an idea of what the diagram is about. That's the only reason I did not rate with 5 stars.

Unusually great, idiomatic translation.

This is a "hit the ground running" BPMN book. Within a week, I was able to use BPMN without any previous knowledge. The writing is both learned and inviting, unusual combination for a translated work. I have been forced into process management through circumstances at work and was not looking forward to the field. But the crisp, no nonse honest writing has been a relief. It's NOT a fluff business jargon book, and technical people should find that a welcome change.

Excellent summary, great detail

Really provides both and excellent summary coupled with lots of followup detail. Good for me as a manager to review and understand first few sections, and good to hand down to team responsible for implementation. We also used as foundation to put together summary for BPM roll out concept. Really all around pleased. Several of the examples have errors or switch terms (English edition), but this is first edition so I hope that they'll correct in next version.

Awful

Almost no content. What little there is, it is painfully obvious the author has little insight and nothing to offer. Even worse are the obvious fake reviews. Something I feel very strongly about that Amazon should ban everyone involved. Ban the author. Ban every single person who is a professional reviewer or friend of the author. Should give serious consideration to extending the refund function to digital goods.

Most people would avail themselves of it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of self publishing but there is a fine line between a self published book of worth and pumping out garbage to see who is willing to risk a couple of bucks on the off chance the author might know SOMETHING.

Easy read for men out there.

This book tackles about the basic body language techniques for men. The texts are presented in a simple and a little naughty way (talk about crotch talking). Nothing special or new science but a known and classic fact about men, practiced for centuries by powerful and influential men around the world. Pretty straightforward albeit sometimes, there are parts that are shallow in contexts. What I i just don't like in this book is the way it was written, never read lot of "crotch" before in one book. Anyhow, it is written to send a strong message to men, to be confident about themselves and start to act like a powerful man.

This book was really good to read. I was looking for some more info on body language tips, and this was exactly what I needed. It covers lots of topics like high status body language, how to have dominant body language, how to be a badass, and more. I’d recommend this to anyone interested in having smooth body language and command an audience.

Although the authors emphasize the importance of cooking with food that’s in season, readers will be quickly tipped off that this isn’t your average Tuscan, fresh cooking cookbook once they look at the "basic ingredients" list, which includes caul (a thin membrane lining the abdominal cavity of pigs and sheep), caviar, foie gras, porcini mushrooms and truffles. The recipes are elegant yet, for the most part, not stuffy: Golden Scallops Salad, Grilled Sliced Tuna with Giant White Beans and Romanesco, and "Guitar String" Pasta with Red Shrimp and Baby Zucchini. All of them demonstrate the Mantuanos’ penchant for mixing unusual but complementary flavors. Still, the book’s complex dishes, such as Seared Foie Gras with White Corn Polenta and Quince with Passito di Moscato Syrup, may deter more casual home cooks. Photos.

Another Pretty Italian Restaurant Cookbook. Too Expensive

`The Spiaggia Cookbook' by Tony and Cathy Mantuano is a Chicago Italian restaurant cookbook that aspires to be more than a souvenir of one's visit to the restaurant. The challenge to the reviewer is against what standard do we measure this book. The two which come to mind are Chicago's `Tru' by Rick Tramonto and `the Babbo Cookbook' by premier New York Italian chef / restaurateur Mario Batali.

For starters, the Spiaggia book begins with Foreword by Chicago real estate and restaurant developer, Larry Levy who touts the Mantuanos for filling Levy's prime real estate at the head of Chicago's Golden Mile in a big new building with a classy restaurant which brings to life the Italian cuisine on the shores of Lake Michigan. This is only fitting, as `spiaggia' means `shore' in Italian. Mr. Levy celebrates the number of culinary celebrities that have dined at Spiaggia and found it good. Tony Mantuano follows with an introduction that recounts the year he and his wife spent in Italy staging at several restorantes and trattoria in preparation for the opening of Spaggia. The Intro also sings the usual hymns to fresh ingredients and authentic Italian dishes. I confess this kind of literary glad-handing never really impresses me except that it sets the stage for what the author is attempting to do with their book.

Let me get the comparison to `Tru' out of the way quickly by saying that I would never recommend the `Tru' cookbook to anyone looking for a collection of handy recipes, as it is high end French technique with a huge dollop of Charlie Trotter / Thomas Keller innovation thrown in. In fact, I rate Tramonto's communicating his techniques superior to fellow Chicago chef Trotter. The Mantuanos, on the other hand do stay true to classic Italian techniques, if not necessarily Italian dishes. Therefore, for a lower price, `Tru' gives more high faluttin' technique for the buck, if that is what you want.

`The Spiaggia Cookbook' and Batali's `The Babbo Cookbook' are exactly the same list price; however, Mario gives us 300 pages of recipes from the beginning of the antipasto chapter to the end of the Dolci chapter. The Mantuanos give us 150 pages for the same price. With regard to how `Italian' the recipes may be, I find it very odd to find recipes in `The Spiaggia Cookbook' calling for Japanese Kobe beef, Russian sevruga caviar, and French foie gras. In contrast, Mario strictly follows his philosophy of giving us recipes exactly as done in his restaurant, with true Italian ingredients, and, ingredients which are practically local to New York such as fiddlehead ferns from New England and New Orleans shrimp.

`The Spiaggia Cookbook' makes much fuss over their Italian wines and local wines based on Italian grapes, yet the book gives us nothing on matching wines to the dishes. Mario also gives us no wine pairings, but then he doesn't run on about it in his book. Both books are organized according to the traditional courses in the Italian meal. These are antipasti, Primi (pasta, risotto, and soup), Secondi (main courses), Formaggi (cheese), and Dolci (desserts). I give Spiaggia extra points for giving us the titles of all their recipes in the Table of Contents at the front of the book. Regarding the layout of the recipe writing, I much prefer the Babbo style with numbered steps. It is simply much easier to follow by remembering you have finished step 4 and need to go on to step 5 rather than balancing a ruler on the page to mark your place in the text. I also found the conceit of two circles to punctuate some important sentences as a waste of printing costs. They distract more than they highlight.

As far as the actual technique in the two books, I personally prefer Mario's recipes as I simply thing they are more genuinely Italian. As neither I nor Ruth Reichl can seem to get a reservation at Babbo, I like the idea that I can reproduce their recipes, but as an amateur student of Italian cuisine, I like it more that I can get real Italian and Italian style cooking in Babbo while I do not trust that the Mantuanos are giving us the genuine article. Spiaggia and Babbo have very few recipes in common, but both give us the recipe for potato gnocchi. Spiaggia roasts their potatoes and mixes potatoes, egg, and flour in a bowl. Babbo boils the potatoes with skins on and mixes potato, flour, and egg using the classic `well' or `fountain' method. As most Italians historically did not have ovens, I tend to believe the Babbo method is closer to the traditional method. This consideration may mean little to people who have eaten at Spiaggia and were impressed by the experience. But, for those of us who buy cookbooks and have no plans to be in Chicago in the near future, I think that for the price, this book does not measure up to the five star standard in Italian restaurant cookbooks.

This is a good book, but there are better high-end Italian restaurant cookbooks to be had. I agree with other reviewers who praise the look of the book, but it is simply not 'best in show'.

If I get one keeper recipe from a cookbook I think I'm doing well. I love to cook and usually make a recipe the first time according to the directions and then vary it in the future. I made the filet mignon with braised oxtails and purple potato puree and served a basic green salad with the Spiaggia dressing. Yes it took me a couple of days to make the veal stock and the braised oxtails, but final cooking time and plating up went really fast. I kept the potatoes and oxtails warm in the oven while I finished the steaks. Sauce was also kept warm on the cooktop. I had never used caul fat before and will be using it more in the future (it's super cheap) and it melts and disappears when cooked. If I were looking to cut costs, I would have used Yellow Yukons and broccoli not broccoli rabe. The other keeper was the dressing. It has truffle oil, sherry vinegar, browned butter, and balsamic vineger along with olive oil..... what could be wrong with those mixed together... although I though it could be a train wreck!! I had a standby on hand. I'm making Tuscan Bean and Spelt Soup next! I would love to visit the restaurant in Chicago, but for now I'll be tasting it at home....
