Engrossing and disturbing at the same time - fantastic.

It's fascinating to see the divergent reviews that this book generates; for my part, I couldn't put it down. The book creates a world and atmosphere in which you become completely engrossed - it is a disturbing place to be.

The story follows Joseph K while he is on trial by a seemingly arbitrary court system. What starts out feeling like a cautionary tale about misplaced and abused power quickly gets stranger and morphs into a story of a deeper and more personal trial. Before long, you notice that K is the one who seems to be doing the work of trying himself.

I was left thinking for a long time about the meaning behind the story and a lot of its symbols and components - I don't consider the fact that I still had questions to be a bad thing. On the contrary, this one left me feeling strangely energized.

Highly recommended for people who like philosophy, examinations of the human condition, or existentialism.

Are we all Gregor Sassma? Maybe, Franz, maybe...

For all the debate and argument over what this story means, the plot of the Metamorphosis is refreshingly simple. Gregor Sassma wakes up one morning and discovers that, over the course of the night, he's been transformed into a giant insect. The rest of this novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition without providing a burden for his parents (who he has spent his life supporting and, it is made clear, veiw their son as little more than a commodity to be exploited) or for his sweet younger sister who Gregor views with an almost heart breaking affection. For his efforts to not bother society with his new insect identity, Gregor is both shunned and eventually destroyed by that same society, which of course now has little use for him. As dark as that plot outline may sound, what is often forgotten (or simply ignored) is that the Metamorphosis is -- in many ways -- a comic masterpiece. Instead of engaging in a lot of portentous philosophizing, Kafka tells his bizarre tell in the most deadpan of fashions. Ignoring the temptation to come up with any mystical or scientific explanations, Kafka simply shows us that Gregor has become an insect and explains how the rest of his short life is lived. This detached, amused tone makes the story's brutal conclusion all the more powerful.
As well, for all the theories on what Kafka's "saying" with this story, the reasons behind Gregor's transformation are not all that complicated or hard to figure out. Kafka, as opposed to too many other writers since, declines to spell out the specific reasons but still makes it clear that Gregor (and by extension, all the other Gregors in the world) had allowed himself to become a powerless insect long before actually physically turning into one. As someone who as selflessly sacrificed whatever independence he may have had to support his uncaring parents and their attempts to live an "upper class" life without actually having to suffer for it, Gregor has already willingly given up all the unique traits that make one a human. For me, even more disturbing than Gregor's fate, is Kafka's concluding suggestions that, now that Gregor has outlived his usefulness, his parents will now move on to his innocent sister. In short, despite the example of Gregor's own terrible fate, society will continue on its way with the majority of us giving up our own humanity to support the whims of a select few.
From the brilliant opening lines all the way to its hauntingly deadpan conclusion, The Metamorphosis is a powerful and satirical indictment of the bourgeois condition. Over the past few decades, the term Kafkaesque has been tossed around with a dangerous lack of discretion. It seems any writer who creates an absurd or dark trap for his main character ends up being labeled Kafkaesque. However, as this story especially makes clear, Franz Kafka was more than just an adjective. He was a unique and individual writer whose brilliance cannot be easily duplicated.

Strange and difficult

This has got to be one of the strangest books I've ever read. Is it a bad dream or is it the angst we all feel over our misdeeds. There were times I wanted to stop reading because it didn't seem to make sense. Now I'm quite sure it is not supposed to make sense. I'm not sure I would recommend this book to anyone a although the writing has a certain sort of genius to it. The book certainly evokes a number of feelings we don't normally like feeling.

Just An Average Book, Very Basic General Information, You've Also Got to Endure an Author Stroking His Ego for Quite a Few Pages

This book takes quite a while to get going, and when I say quite a while, that's a severe understatement. For page after page the reader is subjected to Is this book for you? Why would you want to read this book, how to use this book (you know if you're not familiar with the whole turning a page action), the author's life story, why his book is different, the benefits of reading this book, what will you gain from this book, do you want to do it yourself? Of course the reader does, that's why they bought the book. I don't know how many pages we're in at this stage but at least a quarter of the book had been this nonsense and I was beginning to wonder if there was any actual picking winning shares content in the book at all. Finally we get to something that isn't stroking the author's ego but it's pretty basic stuff starting off with how a business works. Now if you never went to high school or something like this, these chapters might be of some interest to you but if you've even read another book on share trading or business in general this stuff is going to be beneath your knowledge level. We then move on to assets, cash flow, methods of valuing a company, it's unlikely you don't know this stuff. Eventually we move on to talking about the life span of a public company, companies going out of favour and these sorts of terms. This is basically the author's picking winning shares strategy is coming from and I have to say it is pretty high risk, if you're such a novice to the business world you needed the prior chapters you're not going to be able to pick a company out of favour with the market that actually is unlikely to go bankrupt. There's not much else in this book, I'd recommend giving it a miss.

I'd recommend getting something like Top Stocks 2013: A Sharebuyer's Guide, even if you're buying an outdated copy or aren't interested in the companies it is talking about, it still teaches you how to pick a good company from a bad one to invest in, in the introduction chapters.

Still the Best

The two reviews below (as of this posting) are so complete and useful that I won't bother repeating what they've so articulately said. Both of them, however, express disappointment with the paucity of introductory material in the Pelican. Initially, I agreed with them. After the fullness of biography and background in the previous edition--not to mention the wonderful illustrations of the Globe by C. Walter Hodge--the cursory intros in the new Pelican took me as rather much of a letdown. (And why weren't the brief essays signed?) Part of the fun of any new Shakespeare, after all, is in the editorial bells and whistles!
On further thought and reading, however, I've changed my mind. The introductions to the individual plays and poetry continue to be full, thoughtful, and elegant (especially John Hollander's essay on the sonnets), and the annotations are clear and well-placed. The brief essays at the beginning of the volume provide only the essential background that the individual intros really can't. In that context, their "just the facts, ma'm" approach is refreshing and bound to be less intimidating to the first-time reader. I mean, how many students have been put off Shakespeare by the lengthiness and detail of preferatory material? Don't all the bells and whistles of other volumes imply to the fearful that one has to become a scholar simply to enjoy the show? One does need help, of course, but not a scholastic cloud. (The Norton is especially horrifying in this vein; woe to the 101 student whose instructor has chosen this for the class.)
The new Pelican does seem somehow "thinner" than its predecessor--but we might just as well say "sleeker." This is still by far the friendliest one-volume Shakespeare out there. In twenty years, this will be just as beloved as the first edition!

Overall, the one to buy

Like many English majors in the sixties, I grew up reading this edition. The old one had a distinguished roster of editors and was pleasant to hold and read. In the latter category this new edition is a noble successor: clear type, full names of characters (no more "1 Serv."), and notes indicated by line numbers. This new edition fails however in its skimpy (9 pages!) of introductory matter and a masthead of editors who are fairly obscure. Still, I would award the plume to this volume for the first-time reader who wants a complete Shakespeare. The pleasant appearance that I mentioned above is important--we want a volume easy to handle and read. The editing is conservative and non-controversial (no more of the Oxford/Norton kinky titles--"The First Part of the Contention," sheesh--that's Henry VI, Part 2 to us plebians). And it's not as bulky as the power-lifter's Riverside and other editions. To sum up: if you have in your family or acquaintance a budding Shakespearean, this is still the one to buy. Seeing this book in the shop was like greeting an old friend. I look forward to hundreds of wonderful hours with it.

My Favorite Complete Shakespeare...

The Pelican Shakespeare is oftentimes overlooked in a very crowded field of complete Shakespeare editions. It faces stiff competition from the likes of Norton (who have more or less monopolized all of literature for college students these days), Bevington, and Riverside. I own all three, but I find myself coming back to Pelican.

At first look, one can definately see why a past reviewer calls The New Pelican Shakespeare "sleeker." It is considerably more compact than the aforementioned heavyweights, and more brief compared even to the first edition. The paperback release, in particular, is ideal for students who need an edition to carry to class (it weighs less than a standard textbook).

The reason for this is that, unlike Norton in particular, the annotations throughout the text itself is relatively light. This is pretty refreshing when you just want to get to the plays. The quality of these notes is exemplary. They are cohesive, unassuming, and enlightening. As with the Bevington, line numbers are marked where there is an accompanying footnote - something that saves the reader from having to count between markings and from wondering whether there is any footnote at all for the present line. Also, general introductory material (a biography of Shakespeare, an essay on Elizabethan theatre, and an essay on the text of his plays) is kept to a bare minimum. These brief essays amount to less than ten pages. This is pretty modest compared to the likes of Riverside or Bevington. I'm not too fond of humongous all-encompassing introductions, and professors usually suppliment the reading with an external book instead: something like Russ MacDonald's "Bedford Companion to Shakespeare" for English students or Michael York and Adrian Brine's "A Shakespearean Actor Prepares" for theatre students.

I was actually taken aback by how much revision was done to the original Pelican Shakespeare - in fact, just about everything here is new: new introductions, new annotations, and even newly constructed texts themselves. (Example: In the first edition, Juliet's line in Act II: Scene 2 of "Romeo and Juliet" reads: "That which we call a rose, by any other name..." The new edition reads "That which we call a rose by any other word..." Both editions, though, include footnotes indicating the variance.) I do kind of miss the old first edition (edited by Alfred Harbage). It was a formidible, scholarly, and easy-to-use edition. In particular I will miss it's introductions to each individual play. The introductions here are by no means inferior - they are eloquent, informative, and well-researched. I may have just become attached to the more stately essays in the previous edition.

The texts themselves are authoritative, conservatively edited and beautifully presented - standard modern spelling, readable and clear typeface in two columns. "King Lear" is here in three versions. The 1608 Quarto and 1623 Folio texts are presented in columns juxtaposed side-by-side (makes for convenient comparison), followed by a conflated text (the one from the old Harbage edition, slightly edited) that combines the best of both worlds. Ample black-and-white illustrations (as well as attractive fascimiles of the first few pages of the First Folio and Quartos) compliment the edition. Overall, the Pelican Shakespeare is an edition designed with the everyday reader in mind. Students will find it a streamlined, well-designed edition for serious study.

Blah...disappointing book

Very disappointed. My boys love Minecraft and own a couple of other Minecraft books. I thought this would be nice to add to their collection, but when it arrived, I was underwhelmed. It was to be a Christmas gift for one of my boys, but after flipping through it, I decided to just add it to the bookshelf and order a better book. We have the one with the Golden Pear on the front, the red stone book, and the one with the Sword (a hardcover book). All have nice, colorful pages and show a lot of neat Minecraft stuff. This is plain white paper with text. That's it. Very boring and unappealing. Not really worth my time to return...save yourself the hassle and get the ones with the colorful pages.

Not your typical handbook.

My son earned this by doing extra school work and reading time. I felt sorry for him because it was half the size of the handbooks that his brothers selected and it was taller, so it stood out, was thin, and didn't have the "awe" texture or look of their other books. He looked through it. HE's ASD, so no comments were needed. He set it aside and walked away. I don't feel it was advertised incorrectly, I just feel it was way overpriced for the product and extremely disappointing for someone who worked so hard to earn it.

Every beginner on minecraft needs this book. My 7 year old had no idea what to do so hardly played it. Bought this and not only has it encouraged him to read more but also showed him how to get through his first night in the game and start to develop his own world.

About the Author
Dr Stephen Bull is the Curator of the Museum of Lancashire in Preston, which incorporates the collections of several local regiments. Born in 1960, he graduated from the University of Wales with a BA (Hons) in history in 1981 and obtained his doctorate from University College, Swansea. For several years he worked at the National Army Museum. He has written numerous articles for specialist journals, including a number on the weapons and tactics of World War I.

A ten-year battalion commander's course in 64 pages

My private library has a number of military manuals and books on military science. "World War II Infantry Tactics: Company and Battalion" is a condensed, image-rich guide for the military historian, World War Two gamer, and the scale modeller. Dr. Bull examines both the theory and practice of British, German, and American armies in Western Europe between 1939 and 1945. Don't look in here for the latest and greatest cutting-edge infantry tactics--Stephen Bull wrote about what happened in the past. That's history, folks! A battallion commander would need about a decade of military education and experience to apply the lessons in this thin little book.

Line and block charts dipict the organization of line infantry battalions--one from the three countries. Germany seemed to have a battalion for every purpose, so the charts are a bit generic--but give a clear picture of the parts if a battalion. Dr. Bull shows how the different parts worked together through text and pictures. The color plates on pages 33-40 are easy to understand. Showing how the British and Germans conducted urban warfare is valuable to understanding why American infantry doctrine until Iraq was to stay out of cities--and blast the cities into rubble. City fighting can be more costly than taking down a fortified enemy postion. Dr. Bull didn't mention non-combatant civilians or guerrilla activity--but neither did US Army doctrine of the period, at least not for the line infantry battalion commander. Bull did cover machine guns, mortars, anti-tank techniques, land mines and booby traps, mototized and "armored" infantry, and tank-infantry cooperation in detail. World War Two combat was combined arms--the infantry was never alone (though the World War Two infantry veterans I spoke to swear they were the Army's step children).

"World War II Infantry Tactics" spotlighted that German, British, and American infantry tactics were surprisingly similar. Surprising, perhaps, to someone who didn't consider that humans were conducting the same sort of activities over the same terrain with similar hardware--but there were significant differences between the three nations. At the basic squad eqipment level, the Germans had a belt fed light machine gun and severl 5-shot bolt action rifles and one or two submachine guns, the British BREN gun fed from a "30-shot" box mangazine and was teamed up with several 10-shot bolt action rifles and a submachine gun or two, and the Americans had one or two Browning Automatic Rifles (20-shot magazine) and bunches of the 8-shot semiautomatic Garand M1 rifle (and occassionally .45 caliber submachine guns and semiautomatic M1 carbines). The basic "fire volume" was about the same, even though the American Browning Automatic Rifle didn't have a quick-change barrel like the other two squad automatic weapons. America got into the war about the time that the anti-tank rifle was being retired for being ineffective against tanks, and American infantry generally had the workable 2.36-inch rocket launcher (AKA "Bazooka") and the M9 and M9A1 anti-tank rifle grenade when they began seeing large-scale combat, so they didn't have to have the elaborate anti-tank teams that the British and Germans were forced to cobble together with improvised anti-tank weapons. Fighting a tank while armed with just a crowbar--so that your buddy with a can of "petrol" can heave it atop the engine deck of an enemy tank so that a third man can puncture the can with rifle fire and a fourth can ignite the flammable fuel with a hand grenade or perhaps a bundle of smoldering rags is different from waiting until the enemy tank passes by your Bazooka position until you can get a flank or rear shot! The early-war infantry 37mm anti-tank guns were not very effective on late-war light tanks--and just about everybody had medium tanks in service during 1942.

"World War II Infantry Tactics: Company And Battalion" is concise and compact. If I were briefing "battalion commanders" in a WWII war game, I'd want them to have read this book first. I learned a few things that I hadn't known before, and I have dozens of other books on this very subject in my collection!

About the Author
Dr. Brian Matsumoto is a retired research scientist who has worked for 30 years documenting experiments with technologically advanced cameras. He now spends his time photographing with a variety of cameras and lenses, and is interested in expanding a camera’s potential by pairing it with specialized optics such as microscopes and telescopes. He enjoys spending time outdoors and carries his camera on all of his hikes to photograph nature. In addition to the nine books he has written for Rocky Nook, Dr. Matsumoto has published several articles and has had his photographs published in a number of periodicals. His photographs have also appeared on the covers of American Laboratory, BioTechniques, and BioPhotonics. He is experienced in the technical aspects of photography and is an adjunct instructor for the Hooke College of Applied Sciences. Dr. Matsumoto recently served as a judge for the Olympus BioScapes International Digital Imaging Competition.

Carol F. Roullard has been an avid photographer since her high school years when she first experimented with black-and-white artistic composition. Since then, she has continued photographing mainly nature and architecture. Ms. Roullard has used a variety of cameras covering a wide range of makes and models, from simple point-and-shoot to complex professional-level cameras. In addition to co-authoring eight books for Rocky Nook, Ms. Roullard produces award-winning fine art photography and utilizes her previous art business experience to manage her online gallery and present her work at art shows. Recently, Ms. Roullard has begun giving speeches for writers and photography associations. Rocky nook's "The Sony A7ii: The Unofficial Quintessential Guide" was worth waiting for and money sell spent.

Long time coming...and worth the wait. While I had read reviews of other books written by Mr. Matsumoto, this is the first of his books that I have purchased and read. As the owner of a Sony A7ii, and a serious amateur photographer, I was well versed in the camera's use.....but this book has allowed me to go to a new level. The book includes the technical information that one would expect, but along with personal observations, recommendations, and useful examples, the writing is clean, crisp, and understandable (for the experienced and inexperienced photographer). The only downside of the book is that it has already cost me some money.....in that I took a couple of Brian's suggestions to heart and added to my inventory of "old" and relatively "inexpensive" lenses as well as certain filters and a current Sony lens. A big thumbs up on this end.

This guide is as thorough as one could need. Worth the price to have all this well written and well organized information in one place!
One minor omission, the legacy lens adapter table 9-4 on page 237 does not list a Novoflex Adapter for Contax/Yashica lenses. Novoflex does in fact manufacture these, but are poorly identified in the catalog as an Adapter for Contax/Yashica Lens to Sony NEX Camera, as number NEX/CONT. I own one, it works perfectly on my A7II.

Too much filler

It was an okay book. If you're into fermentation at all then you're probably going to have seen most of the recipes already. Out of all the fermentation books I have this is probably the only one I wouldn't recommend having though honestly. Just not enough good recipes, and way too much extra sideline stuff. I bought this thinking it was more of a fermentation cookbook sort of deal, but that's really not what it is. It's pretty much just a collection of whatever the author felt like writing, circling it back around to fermentation in a roundabout way. Example, at one point the author gives a recipe, then goes on about how the recipe was given to them by a transgender and then going on a rant about gender identity. Half a page for a recipe, then a page and half of leftist pummeling. Keep in mind, I am a supporter of the LBGT community, but at the same time I don't buy a recipe book to get pummeled with propaganda. If you're looking for a light evening read, it's a good book, but if you're looking for a real fermentation cookbook with more of a professional scientific style to it, look somewhere else.

Takes us back to a better place............

I was needing to spend time in a waiting room at a hospital and took this with me, to pass the time. I actually started to read it, instead of thumbing through it. I really got what he was saying about how much we can benefit from preserving with fermentation, as in way back when before we had frig's, etc. I also was impressed with the fact that this is a healthy addition to our diets. I really do want to get back to basics and away from so much premade foods. You won't be disappointed. Also, the reviews that are complaining about his homo agenda.......... That is flat out, not the truth. These obviously are homophobic, rigid people that wrote the reviews. They obviously use any avenue to attack gays and this was just another way, trying to get people to not buy his book. Great for anyone just starting out or wanting to go all-in, with ferments.

Good basic knowledge of fermentation using the wild yeasts (i.e. Not adding whey or starter culture to most ferments) and Sandor's storytelling is very entertaining. There are some recipes that are a tad complex for me but I look forward to trying many new things. If you are interested in this book, look for the Facebook group with the same name - lots of support and ideas!
