What I liked:

This story was well thought out. There was enough detail to make the world come to life without overwhelming you with unnecessary facts. The story flowed smoothly and the development of secondary characters was in one with the book size.

What I didn't like:

The main character seemed unable to think or act without warning man. And despite coming across as self sufficient and slightly bandaids in the first chapter, she becomes the typical damsel in distress. The book is riddled with scenes of her being rescued by her love interest. Couple this with her whining and tween level romance and it's disappointing. I spent most of the book hoping she'd shut up about him already or smack herself into adulthood. Or both. Anyway, it was over the top and when they had their first kiss I was actually disappointed because I still felt like she was a middle schooler with a crush. That's not romance, it's embarrassing in an adult woman.

This won't stop me from reading the next one however. I will just hope for some emotional maturity in the main character. The rest of the book, from writing to plot line, was very good. Good enough that I look forward to what else this author might write.

I wish it had some more depth.

I'm giving one star for the awesome premise and another for the funny one liners.

What I found missing:
- outside twists. You have twists in relation to Charlie's role but no plot twists with any other character. Almost everyone is stuck playing their designated role of good guy or bad guy with hardly any depth/history. Motivations were just provided right away and I was never given a chance to ask "hmmm? I wonder why he said that to Charlie?"

- epic fight scenes. The plot gears you up for these intense fight scenes and, to me, the fights end up feeling forced and anticlimactic. Sometimes the fight descriptions were just glossed over or told briefly as an afterthought.

- believable plot. Charlie gets her way a lot. The men in her life say no, she gives a few threats/jokes, they chuckle and give her what she wants. Even if, by doing so, they might risk her life as well as their own. To me, these moments did not ring true for their characters.

My conclusion? I wish this book had been fleshed out more to add some mystery, intensity, and believability.

Ready for book 2

At some time in the past, a virus ran rampant, causing humans to turn into vampire-like creatures. The offspring between a human and a vampire is called an Ash. They are always male and have increased health, stamina, good looks and the need to drink blood.

Charlie Bennet is eighteen and wants to live a normal life with her best friend. That all changes when Charlie becomes the first female Ash. She is forced to live in the Hive and fight to the death for a place in the community. Her trainer, Ryder, is too hot for words and just as deadly. With his help, she learns to fight and stay alive. But, the secret as to why she is the first female Ash complicates things, and soon others want to capture her and study her blood. Who can she trust? And will she survive?

My Thoughts-
If it is any indication, I immediately went to buy book 2 and found it is only for pre-order right now! So, obviously, I liked it. Charlie is a great character who handles all the things thrown her way with spunk and passion. She is believable and enjoyable to read about. Her relationship with Ryder is a given but doesn't get very far in this first book. Hopefully, we'll get more in book 2.

The plot is unique. The idea of only male offspring is intriguing and the way they are mixed into society is detailed and involved. Plus, all the girls seem to fall for them, except our hero of course. When Charlie ends up in the Hive, we see what jerks some of them really are. I find it interesting that only she seems interested in retaining her humanity. The whole complexity of the Hive and the goings on there are great. The background about the virus and the vampires is a good read too and adds texture to the story.

One note of caution, the language is coarse, more so than most YA. Overall I have to give this book 4.5 stars and I can't wait to read the next. Yep, I did pre-order it.

Amazing Journey

This is such an amazing book. It speaks about the Indus, but it also speaks about how a river has been divided between India and Pakistan, how the people and culture have been divided even though they are the same -- and it ends with a few pages on China's role in damming the Indus. Along the way, it talks about the lands of the Indus: Sindh, Punjab, the tribal areas, Kashmir, Ladakh, and more. There's no doubt that the author has done extensive research on North Indian culture encompassing the exactly identical to similar cultures in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

However, I do have a minor issue -- the author mentions on two occasions that South Indian languages did not originate from Sanskrit -- that simply isn't true!

Every once in a while, an amazing work appears; this is one of them, a remarkable story told by a very modern Indiaahna Jones whose journey up the Indus into a wonderland is exciting, illuminating and awe inspiring. To someone born in the West but with roots in northern India, the Indus was a name separated from the country that carries its name, India. Not any more. The journey takes in Mohenjodaro, Harappa, Lahore, Amritsar, Taxila, and the Khyber Pass before reaching Senge Khabab, the `Lion's Mouth'. It doesn't end with the final chapter, far from it, `What will happen if the Chinese dam the Indus?' Alice asks. What indeed. Robbed of a history

Empires of the Indus: From Tibet to Pakistan - The Story of a River

I grew up in the state of Maharashtra, India. When I was around 12, a friend moved to the neighboring state of Karnataka. When he opened his book from history class, is when we first realized that we read what our State Education Boards decreed us to read! The hero in my text books, was the bad guy in his history class. In that moment we both grew up a little :-)

Empires of the Indus, took me back to that moment. A riveting read, I discovered the rich and deep shared by India and her neighbors. The book makes you realize how so much of our history is lost behind the political boundaries that divide what was a land tied together by a myriad of cultures and stories. For anyone that has grown up on a history as told to you by your text books, this book should be an eye-opener.

I finished the book with a tinge of sadness, because I know that I will probably never feel safe enough to go across the border and see with my own eyes the places the author takes us through. Which is also what makes the book such a compelling read - it is perhaps the only way to get to look back into the past of the countries that together make up the Indian sub-continent.
