A Gift for the whole Family

There's a lot to like about The Expectant Dad's Handbook. As a Relationship Counsellor, I particularly appreciate Dean's tips on how husbands can respond supportively to their wives concerns, "just telling her 'not to worry' is really not going to help: reassure her", and "don't try to solve or fix the problem (this is a classic male reflex...just be there to listen". In the postnatal section, I love: "Don't suffer 'back-to-work amnesia...it's too easy to fall into the trap of thinking 'life is back to normal' because you are back into your familiar routine...Mum is probably doing now on her own what you had both been doing up to this point...".
The book addresses the normal and common anxieties, fears and questions that expectant fathers have - a vital part of the parenthood process as being unprepared and experiencing feelings that remain unspoken can impact the labour and also have a tendency to trip up parents in different ways down the track. Dean also validates a new Dad's feelings of jealousy and exclusion, providing advice for how to manage these feelings to they don't fester.
importantly, for the whole family, the book also encourages bonding between dad and baby and why it's important for baby's development, for dad's confidence and for the relationship between partners.
Dean also addresses the need for birth professionals to involve and support fathers so they can step up and realise their potential to comfort and support their wives during labour and birth, rather than step back and risk letting her down when she needs him.
The Expectant Dad's Handbook has just the right amount of information, is written in an engaging, easy to read manner and gives some great nuggets of advice that can, I think, set a new family up for a great start.
