About the Author
Tony Payne has spent more than 25 years in Christian writing and editing as the Publishing Director at Matthias Media. He is the graduate of Moore Theological College and the author and co-author of many popular books and resources, including 2 Ways to live: the choice we all face, Fatherhood: What it is and what its for, Guidance and the Voice of God, The Course of your Life, and How to Walk into Church. Colin Marshall has spent the past 30 years training men and women in the ministry of the gospel, both in university and local church contexts. He is a graduate of Moore Theological College and the author of Growth Groups, a training course for small group leaders, and Passing the Baton, a handbook for ministry. He is now the CEO of Vine Growers.

Paradigm-shifting

God works in wondrous ways. For the first time in my life, I realized that a Christian is nothing more than a person who follows Jesus, a disciple. This may seem to be common sense, but I just never believed it deep down, confining a Christian rather to a list of doctrinal beliefs. That all changed. Then God brings this book to my life. You of course see how the dots connect. First, I see Christians are disciples and then God brings a book in my life to show that ministry is simply disciple-making. Truly a paradigm shift. As a small group leader and interested church planter, I am gripped by this vision. I am praying the Lord brings disciples in my life to train.

Revolutionary Ancient History!

Our pastors recommended this book to me! They are contemplating making major changes in our church so that many more of us can become "disciple-making disciples." The title put me off at first--the word "trellis" doesn't seem very masculine to me. But the analogy is right on! If you're like me, you know that something is significantly wrong with most of our churches. AND you know that the never-ending stream of faddish books and suggested changes have all fallen far short of expectations! This book takes a hard look at the discipleship Jesus modelled and taught, as well as our major distortions. Informative and transformational--highest recommendations!

balanced look at growing the church

It's easy for churches to end up on one of two ministry philosophy poles. One end is the idea that the pastor and elders are responsible for ministry inside and outside the church. The other end says we just need small groups to grow and loving on people will win and build Christians.
This book does a fantastic job of balancing the importance of pastoral gifts and ministry with the flocks' responsibility to be at work making disciples as well. It's a very practical book that was helpful for a PCA ruling elder whose church needs to remember that all o us should be at work tending the vine.
