A plateau in cognition can make one feel stagnant. So why wouldn't a plateau in developing skills make one feel "stuck"? Communication skills on a letter-board or a key-board is essentially the same motor skill - Pointing. Growing one's skill beyond pointing is an essential goal of RPM. Otherwise, a 'Skill-plateau' may lead to further frustration if the mind is unable to direct the body to manipulate its environment. The external world, including one's own body, is a three dimensional space. To manipulate it one has to overcome selective activities (stims or OCDs). So there needs to be step-by-step lesson plan on how to achieve each goal. This book is an earnest effort in "how" to plan the first skill goals that go beyond pointing skills. It goes a step further to experience the world through the principles of Rapid Prompting Method.

About the Author
Soma Mukhopadhyay is the Executive Director of Education for HALO (Helping Autism through Learning & Outreach) in Austin, TX. Soma holds a Bachelors of Education degree and a Masters degree in Chemistry. Students come from all over the world to benefit from her innovative teaching approach. Since developing the Rapid Prompting Method to teach her own son Tito, Soma has been featured on CNN International, 60 Minutes II, PBS, BBC and Good Morning America, and in the New York Times newspaper, People, Scientific American and National Geographic magazines.

Practical guide to advance learners function in a 3D world!

Previous books by Soma Mukhopadhyay have focused on education and communicate with individuals who are frequently classified as low-functioning/non-verbal (unreliably verbal) or severely autistic (although RPM also benefits the "high functioning" autistic population as well). This book expands those critical skills learned in acquiring education and communicate to 3D objects and activities necessary to manipulate and use in order to function in this world. I love this book because if followed it can help learners to not only BE and contribute with their learning, knowledge and ideas, but have practical skills for everyday life such as aiming correctly and bring, picking, setting, etc objects down as well as playing some simple games. This book helps the learner become a well-rounded, more independent contributor in society. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a child/student who is not yet consistently successful in basic task like picking and choosing object, bringing and placing objects correctly when desired and on command and anyone who wants to understand Autism better!

An extremely practical guide for anyone who is trying to help someone with autism make body/brain connections

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is working in the trenches with students affected by Autism. Soma is absolutely brilliant and understands the Autistic brain so well. She knows that non-verbal students need to learn other ways to communicate and her RPM has been life changing for so many. Soma also knows that there is so much more to it than us teaching and students comprehending a concept. For our students to be able to apply what they learn and really live independently in the world, it requires much motor memory practice and repetition until many various skills are acquired. I have had more than one student spell out on a qwerty board that they wish they could consistently get their bodies to listen to their minds. This book is the closest thing I have ever seen that is like a "how to" guide for our students. I am so excited to use it to support our students in reaching the next level. Thank you Soma for working tirelessly to help so many!

Outstanding work on teaching students whose autism limits their motor skills

This book is superb. Its focus is on increasing tolerance and decreasing hypersensitivity and providing motivation and encouragement to overcome limits on motor planning. It is comprehensive providing concrete steps to independence and multiple lesson plans. There's a plethora of ingenious teaching in this volume including using strengths like the letterboard to teach the weaker area of motor planning. The student is supported through choice making and teacher acknowledgment of the difficulty of motor planning. The issues of the gradation of movement and depth and distance perception are addressed. Ideal schedules are included. With a chapter on using RPM to teach recreational activities the teaching possibilities are limitless. Highly inspirational in that both hope and how to are provided.
