Facsimile reprint of Vol.1 of 1st edition with a misleading title

An earlier reviewer was under the impression that this book "is a direct scan of the original printing of these poems with no added materials... you see it just as they did in 1821." This is what the title would lead you to believe but it is not true since you are getting only the first half of the book.

Here are bibliographic details of the original edition:

THE VILLAGE MINSTREL AND OTHER POEMS. Taylor and Hessey. 1821.
Two volumes 12mo. Pp.xxviii, 216; vi, 211.

The present book, which clearly states 'Vol.I' on the facsimile title-page, the contents page, and the last page of the text but NOT in the title given by the Publisher, contains just 216 pages (+ xxviii Pp. Introduction) and is a facsimile reprint of Volume 1 ONLY of Clare's THE VILLAGE MINSTREL AND OTHER POEMS that has been given a misleading title by Bibliobazaar.

Also, like all four of the books that were published in Clare's lifetime, it gives us a text that has been gentrified for the benefit of his contemporary readers by being subjected to excisions and alterations by his early editors.

The "raw" manuscript text of the complete text of THE VILLAGE MINSTREL AND OTHER POEMS will be found in Eric Robinson's Oxford English Texts edition The Early Poems of John Clare, 1804-1822: Volume II (Oxford English Texts)

Exactly as it is.

I appreciate this publisher for providing reprints of these items that you cannot otherwise get and at reasonable prices. The binding was well done and all the pages looked well scanned except one. This is a direct scan of the original printing of these poems with no added materials (i.e. no current scholarship, glossing, intro. etc)--you see it just as they did in 1821. As I was unable to find a more current reprinted edition of the full text of The Village Minstrel, I was glad to find this.

John Clare himself is an interesting romantic era poet that is stills surprisingly on the fringes of the canon, despite some attention by eco-critics, and even by Raymond Williams in his book The Country and the City. If you are interested in poets form this era you do not want to overlook him as another voice with the other romantic poets. He provides an interesting context to any discussion about land changes, the ecology, the enclosure movement, and "peasant" or "working class" writers of this time period.

Famed newspaper death prediction was anything but

No history of newspapering in the post World War II era would be complete without reference to this all-encompassing work by Meyer.
He brings to the page not only a significant back-story in newspaper journalism as he experienced it in the US as newspapers began to decline, but also his considerable experience as an academic and teacher.
His many student-centred research projects into all aspects of the newspaper business enable him to write with authority about the trends.
He is perhaps best-known for his prediction that the last newspaper will be printed in 2044, but in this book - now in its second version - he is at pains to say that was not a prediction at all.
As he says, he merely "straight-lined" a couple of trend graphs and noted where they intersected with rock bottom. As he says, nature throws us curves and something is likely to intercede well before that fateful year.
This book is an essential tool for anyone trying to make sense of what's happening to what was once a seemingly impregnable industry.

Just what I needed

I have used the first edition of Philip Meyer's book, so I ordered the second edition for my class on Global Media. The students liked it and yet they thought it was rather dry because Meyer tries to quantify much of what has happened in newspapers in the last 20 years or so.
But that was what I wanted, so the book works just fine as far as I can concerned. Meyer put a lot of work into writing and updating this book and lays down an academic basis for understanding the profound changes under way in newspapers. Some are surviving and really changing with the times.

Right book at the right time

This book is a unique and excellent work attempting to statistically discover relationships between newspaper characteristics, newspaper circulations (and changes thereto), and communities. The newspaper industry was behind other U.S. companies that directly serve consumers for decades in conducting rigorous research. Now, with scholars like Phil Meyer and organizations such as the Newspaper Management Center at Northwestern U., the newspaper industry might finally find out what it needs to know to survive--as long as it is not already too late.

As for the other reviewer's charge that Phil wants papers to become more liberal, the reviewer has had to stretch to find what he found and then takes it out of context. The entire claim that newspapers are liberally biased is nonsense; in 23 out of 25 presidential elections in the 20th century, the majority of U.S. newspapers endorsed the Republican candidate for president. That is a fact. Check it yourself. Daily news coverage is heavily biased toward the status quo, whatever it might be, as reporters interview governors, senators, CEOs, etc.; they rarely interview union presidents and almost never interview true leftists, while constantly interviewing extreme right-wingers. The "liberal bias" charge is manufactured by the right-wing to try to make much of U.S. news media--which overwhelmingly is conventional, traditional, slowly changing--as reactionary and regressive as those making the charge.

I can only propose that my anticipated comments by EGW would have been much more - Must say that all Volumns 1- 7A are very helpful. Really wish I could find the entire SDA Bible Commentary that covers every verse like the printed edition does. I still have the original set my Mom bought some 40 years ago and I do use them. The convenience of having a mobile package to use when away from home (Regular SDA Commentary) with Sister White's comments WOULD really be nice.

This is NOT the SDA Bible commentary. It is ONLY E.G.W.'s comments which are a part of the complete commentary. The title is somewhat misleading. With that clearly understood, there is still value but just know that you are not getting the entire or complete volume. Many areas missing.
