Unconventional Wisdom

Another eye opening book from Angelo Codevilla. His views on foreign policy are likely to be so different from what you normally hear on the Sunday morning shows that reading this book is a breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, I can only give this book 4 stars because Professor Codevilla fails in his discussion of the "Surge" in Iraq. He essentially characterizes it as a continuation of the unrealistic occupation he has criticized since 2003. However, the Surge is actually a great example of exactly the sort of realism Codevilla advocates (as opposed to the sterile Scowcroftian variety). Al Qaeda in Iraq represented the Islamist movement in the Arab world, a force Codevilla has elsewhere recognized as a real response by the Islamic world to their corrupt secular regimes. As the mosque represents the only surviving element of civil society, and the Islamic world takes its religion seriously, the Islamist movement is readily comprehensible as a political force.

In Iraq, rather than wishing things were other than they were, we allied ourselves with the enemies of our enemies, who were more than willing to work with us to kill them. Unlike Codevilla's pretended epistemological uncertainty, in the real world, the ex-Baatthist and tribal levies in the Sons of Iraq (while perhaps not who we would want serving on our local school board) were clearly the enemies of our enemies, and more than willing to kill them. Our enemy, Al Qaeda in Iraq, by word and deed had made clear that they would fight to the death and commit any outrage to gain control of Iraq. Their atrocities had the effect of causing many in the Islamist movement to reconsider their approach. About this, everyone on the ground, Iraqi and American, was in agreement. At a certain point, you can't continue to discount the eyewitnesses.

Leaving aside the question of to what extent Saddam's regime had encouraged the Islamists to make war against America, by the time of the Surge, Saddam was long dead, and the Sons of Iraq were no more willing to fight for his cause than the Germans were for Hitler in 1948. The Islamists were our real enemies because, by the time of the Surge, they and only they had committed themselves by word and deed to the destruction of the West in general and America in particular. Who can argue with this? It is one thing to say the Islamist movement was infected and directed by the Arab and Pakistani intelligence services - it is another to suggest that the movement is without independent existence.

Similarly, his discussion of the Sadrists and Mahdi Army is inadequate, because these forces are clearly Iranian proxies. The Islamic Republic is the child of the Islamist movement, although Shia rather than Sunni, and successfully in control of the Iranian nation state. While the unwillingness to accept that we were at war with Iran can and should be criticized, what is the point of criticizing an alliance with those in Iraq who wanted to fight them? Similarly, Codevilla would agree that, if we are afraid Iraqi Shiites will fall under the control of Iran, this suggests that Iran is our real enemy and that we make war against them as well (which he advocates elsewhere in his book). Similarly, Al Qaeda in Iraq were also quite clearly funded by, and proxies for, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf emirates, who were using them to achieve their own objective of advancing Wahabist Islam in an effort to stabilize their own regimes and to keep jihadists from attacking Saudi princes. Like Laurent Murawiec, we can call on America to be realistic about friends and enemies in Saudi Arabia.

This realism about friends and enemies is precisely what Codevilla has called for in numerous other places in his work. That he discounts it in actual practice in Iraq unfortunately appears to be the Washington game of "not invented here": since Codevilla did not call for a significant change of counterinsurgency tactics, believing any such change futile and counterproductive, when it worked, he was unable to admit his own error. I think part of this has to do with his unfortunate tendency to read mainstream media sources like the NY Time uncritically, as if this were still a time when journalists could be trusted to report the news in the news sections of the paper, regardless of what was opined in the op-ed pages. Actually speaking to U.S. soldiers on the ground revealed a very different story.

Excellent book with a few caveats

I will not even pretend to be a military or diplomatic professional; after all, the book was not really only for [future] war presidents, or Professor Codevilla would have only sold a few to some egocentric wannabes. I am in the well-read amateur/highly interested citizen category, to which i think the book is pitched.

Usually, I think the best way to write a book review is to find the author's premise, and then assess whether s/he accomplished what s/he set out to do. On p. xii we read "Losing wars while winning battles is hard and rare. Yet American presidents and their advisers have managed to do just that for nearly a century. This requires explanation. This book is about dissecting ruinous counsel about war and peace. In the course of clearing rubbish, I hope to uncover sound principles and distill them into advice for future war presidents." On that scale, I would assert that the author completely succeeded in "dissecting" and "clearing," and uncovers and distills principles only slightly less successfully, probably because the future is so, well, unpredictable.

Note that Codevilla generally wrote about US foreign policy sorrows and joys for about the past century. Woodrow Wilson is one of his main bogeymen, and for good reason, getting us into all sorts of trouble for his quixotic quests, which were really being led by his wife and advisers at the end of his regime. But I wish Codevilla had more firmly pinned the tail on the elephant, William McKinley, for it was during his regime that the United States made a sharp U-turn from the wise, prudent 'no entanglements' uber-policy of Washington and successors. McKinley rushed us into the too-easy Spanish American War, largely because the Catholics in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines needed to be Christianized/Protestantized, and we have been building ships, bases and a quasi-empire ever since.

I thoroughly agree with him that a truly realistic, as opposed to a materialist/realist foreign policy, would have a much more profound, sympathetic appreciation for the place of religion in international dynamics. Exactly because western Europe and the two coasts of the US have become largely secularized, means that we have a huge blind spot, a tin ear, in that regard, and have to study extra hard to comprehend the 3/4 of the world that is religious.

Underlying the Professor's 'advice' is a Machiavellian and Hobbsian philosophical foundation, unpleasant in interpersonal relations, but world politics ain't beanbag.

I enjoyed Codevilla's terse and sometimes pungent prose, and highly recommend this book.

Educational, interesting, and highly recommended

It is sad to say that in the past century, the majority of the time America has been at war with something. "Advice to War Presidents: A Remedial Course in Statecraft" is a discussion of the presidency and war, and how the majority of the modern presidents have presided over a war of some sort. Using Woodrow Wilson and World War I as starting points, author Angelo M. Codevilla goes through history drawing the lines and discussing the success and follies of the country. "Advice to War Presidents" is educational, interesting, and highly recommended.

Vandal is officially my favorite villain! (No spoilers)

I've purchased and read all three of the comics, and I must say that Vandal is the villain who I was most eager to see in action. Being the "evil twin" to Naked Justice he is pretty much a sexual maniac in a sinister sense. He is dark and devilishly handsome, even though this is a porn comic I would have loved to have seen him and NJ romantically involved, but that's a ship I'll keep at a humble level. The second installment of this trilogy is my favorite, due to it depicting the most of Vandal's malicious character. Loved it.

The drawings and colors are really good. I do not like the story line. Too much violent subjugation. I expected more hero type action. I will return or sell it back.

How To Eat To Live, Books 1 & 2, were first published in 1967 and 1972 respectively. In these books Elijah Muhammad, Messenger of Allah, pointed out very clearly and decisively that it all is from Allah (God) in person. He believes he met God in the form of a man and it is He who revealed the BEST knowledge of how to eat to live. We make no attempt at reinterpreting, reinventing or improving upon what the Messenger received from God. The objective of this book is only to make the reader aware of the means and ways the food and their by-products have been adversely transformed from the initial published dates of these writings to date, and from this awareness and updated information contained herein, can stay consistent with the principles taught in these writings. We felt there was a great need for an essential companion; essential, because through processing and commercialization, food has taken on a different form from what we had grown accustomed to. Since the 60’s and 70’s, food that was once called “pure” is not pure. Various government agencies responsible for checking the safety of food have adopted various definitions for political and economic reasons, but at the expense of health. Consequently, the word pure simply means that there are “acceptable” levels of toxins, or acceptable levels of mercury, or acceptable levels of pesticides, herbicides or solvents per part, per million. There was a time when brown sugar was a lot healthier than sugar is today. What was once stated as brown sugar was simply “raw sugar.” It was a lot healthier and when Elijah Muhammad recommended it, he did not mean what today has come to be known as brown sugar, which is highly refined white sugar with molasses poured over it. For on one hand he would not advise us to NOT eat refined products while simultaneously telling us to eat the new form of brown sugar. As well, take for instance the aspect of pork. This so-called food is completely prohibited due to forbidding of God and the indestructible worm inside. It is never to be taken for food, so much so, Elijah Muhammad advises that we should die first before we eat it. In today’s market, there are hundreds of thousands of products that are made from pork and its by-products. Since the 60’s, these products are not so well pointed out. These are just a few of the reasons this book is essential and will serve as an excellent companion to How To Eat To Live, Books 1 & 2. There are two main veins this book will pursue: one is the processes of food and the surrounding equipment associated and secondly, the commercialization of it for maximum profits and the expense of the people’s health in general. Of course, secondary to this is the fact that bad food equals bad health, which equals a great economic boom in medicine, doctors and hospitalization. Not only will this book enlightened as to the problems, but it will also furnish solutions in the form of alternatives. We trust the reader will find great benefit in this essential companion.

Outstanding Addition to the Ghostwalker Series

Power Game is the thirteenth installment in Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker action-packed PNR series. This books was a returned to Team Four who have set up their fortress in the bayou of Louisiana. Following the lives of a group of enhanced men and women, who are sometime chemically paired as a means of control by the brilliant yet sociopathic scientist, Peter Whitney, the Ghostwalker's natural sensory gifts are enhanced and now Whitney is experimenting with adding reptile and arachnid DNA in the hopes of creating super soldiers for the government.

Power Games opens with the heroine, Bellisia, has been pressed into service by Peter Whitney on an dangerous undercover assignment in Asia. She discovers a nefarious plot by a former childhood friend, Violet, who is now a U.S. senator and is planning to serve up her Ghostwalker brethren in exchange for power and status. Violet gives the name and location of Team Four to be slated for assassination. When her cover is blown, Bellisia manages to not only escape her potential captors but escape from Dr. Whitney’s handlers and a fate of being sent to a breeding program in Italy. Intrepid Bellisia makes her way to Louisiana to warn the Team Four.

Bellisia is such a powerful and intuitive heroine. She can make field decisions as well as assessment people and situations before rushing into dangerous situations. She lands a job as a waitress and watches the movement of Team Four to assess whether they are the good guys. In her observation she sees and becomes intrigued with Ezekiel Fortunes.

Ezekiel outwardly appears to be a distant, cold man yet from her hiding spot Bella witness how tender Zeke is with the two year old triplets, he often sings to the girls when the other adults are not around. Ezekiel is a protective alpha, at age eight he became caretaker of his two younger brothers and lived on the street when their crack-addicted mother was about to turn her sons over to a pedophile in exchange for drugs and money. Despite his protective nature, Ezekiel respected Bella's strengths and took his time building her trust. In fact, it is Bella who saves Ezekiel when henchmen sent by Violet manages to tranquilize and take him captive. These two worked smoothly as a team.

It was also refreshing to return to the bayou and be immersed in the Fontenot family headed by Nonny. The little girls were just darling, they are thriving under the protection of the Team Four men and women. It was wonderful to re-connect with Cayenne and Pepper and be introduced to a wonderful new character, Donny. Donny is a force in his own right and I hope he becomes an integral part of Team Four community. Power Game ranks in my top five Ghostwalker favorites along with Samurai Game, Murder Game, Conspiracy Game, and Shadow Game. Very highly recommended.

Phenomenal book. Even better series.

There are so many good things about this book and this series that is couldn't possibly write them all here. I found this series thanks to a wonderful bookstore owner who suggested it and I was hooked from book one. We're now on book thirteen and I would read one every week if she would write them that fast!

This is a series about enhanced soldiers. Part of the program they volunteered for and then the man running the program decided to take it one step further and enhance their DNA. They are called the Ghostwalkers because they move silently and by the time you are dead or dying they're already gone.

Another of Whitney's experiments was to pair them with enhanced women in the hopes of getting the perfect soldier. These men are alpha times a thousand, but when they meet their woman and the two join together that alpha goes into protect mode and he will do anything to make sure she is safe and happy.

This story is about Ezekiel and Bellisia. She is still with Whitney when this book starts and is somewhat of a chameleon but more in the octopus family. She can blend but she has venom in her bite as well.

When she finds out that Ezekiel and his team have been sold out she goes to see if they are worth saving. Once she decides that they are she actually saves Ezekiel from being killed. But when his team finds her and ties her up she feels betrayed. She doesn't know that they didn't get the note she left for them.

When Ezekiel is on an errand for Nonny he is stopped in his track by the smell of vanilla and oranges, he follows it to a cafe and finds Bellisia. He is immediately smitten and then when she saves his life later he is completely humbled.

Once his team accepts her, they have to protect her and teach her. They care for one another beyond imagination and she proves to be part of the family. But the journey to get there is filled with assassination attempts, betrayal, a little fun and a lot of action along with a lot of love.

You really need to read this series for these books to affect you the way they do us die hard fans to get a full background, but if you can't start with this one you will be completely hooked like I am.

Great read! Amazing characters, a win for Feehan!

another great ghostwalker book this one alot tamer than the other ones. The characters, Bellisia and Ezekiel are more relateable than her other more dominating and submissive characters in the previous books. the story is more action packed and romantic. Zeke wants someone to love, and is very masculine and rough around the edges on the outside, but on the inside he's soft and cuddly and wants to take care of Bella whose scared and on the run from Whitney and trying to help the team catch Violet and kill her. Christine Feehan is an amazing writer and I read everything she writes, and i am looking forward to where the series goes. It looks like in this one she is setting up for the end of the series. I hope not because i like this series.

Great Guide For Web Markters

These days, there's a lot of talk about location-based services and marketing via those channels. Some of that information is good and some not so good. I was very happy to hear two people who are very knowledgeable in the web marketing arena, namely Aaron Strout and Mike Schneider, were going to tackle this very important topic in book form.

Location-Based Marketing for Dummies is packed full of useful information broken up into five sections:

Putting a Little "Location" in Your Marketing Campaign - which goes over the different location-based services and how they are used by consumers

Location-Based Marketing in Action - which covers the tactical parts of putting together a location-based campaign of your own

Integrating Location into Other Channels - covering the more strategic aspects of incorporating location-based activities into a larger marketing plan

Measuring Your Return on Investment - there's no point in implementing an online marketing plan of any kind if you don't attempt to measure its success; very important information is in this section

The Part of Tens - which is a collection of lists with a lot of interesting and useful information including some possibly up-and-coming location services

All in all this book is easy to understand and breaks down the information in such a way that it's more of a step-by-step guide rather than just a "for Dummies" book. I very much liked how it was organized to take someone from "zero to sixty" in a short time, getting them going on using location-based services as part of their marketing strategy. It's full of useful ideas and tips to help anyone plan and run an excellent program, complete with coupons and loyalty rewards, if those are desired components.

I especially appreciate the measurement section. All too often we're told that online marketing efforts really can't be measured. This is not true, and I'm happy to see this book includes an entire section devoted to this very important aspect of a successful online location-based program.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about location-based technologies and how to use them for business purposes. I think it would be especially useful to the small- or medium-sized business owner or marketing person who is looking to get an edge over the competition. That being said, those with larger companies, especially those with multiple locations, can also learn a lot from this work.

Jumpstart Your Location-based Marketing Program

If you've been waiting to jump into location-based marketing--Foursquare, Gowalla and more--then this book is what you've been waiting for. I've known Aaron for a long time, and he and co-author Mike Schneider have successfully translated their down-to-earth knowledge of marketing fundamentals to the newest location-based services.

The book is easy to read, and the material and tips contained are easy to apply. I recommend this book to anyone just starting into social media, and especially to those considering location-based marketing programs.

Aaron & Mike do a great job of cutting through the clutter to summarize opportunities in location based marketing for businesses big & small. There are great case studies, anecdotes, and examples everywhere in this book. I highly recommend it for people who want to take advantage of location & proximity marketing opportunities for their businesses.
