About the Author
Andrew Kilpatrick is a 1965 graduate of Washington & Lee University. He served in the Peace Corps in India for two years, earned a master's degree in English from the University of Vermont and was a U.S. Navy officer for three years. His 20-year career with newspapers in Birmingham, Alabama, included eight years as a business reporter. Since 1992, he's been reinventing himself --once again -- as a stockbroker with Wells Fargo Advisors in Birmingham.

The best book about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway

Of Permanent Value 2010, The Story of Warren Buffett, A Trilogy Edition, written by Andrew Kilpatrick is arguably the best book about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway. There are so many important things to learn about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway, and Of Permanent Value is a perfect way to learn them all. This book also covers important people around Warren Buffett which helps me understand how Buffett become the person he is today: his philosophies, his views on life, and how he interact with other people. I learned so much from Of Permanent Value, and over the years, Of Permanent Value (filled with Buffett's teaching/experiences, along with some other books that Warren Buffett recommended) helps me to shape my investing philosphies, develop my competencies, and keeping things in perspective. Simply, this book is a must read for all Warren Buffett fans and all value investor.

Kudos to Andy Kilpatrick for putting this book together and continue to update the story about the greatest value investor of our time. I also appreciate Andy Kilpatrick's and Warren Buffett's sense of humor.

Things you will learn from this book (in addition to Warren Buffett): Charlie Munger, Berkshire operating businesses, Insurance business, Energy business, Bonds, Modern stocks, How Buffett partnership and Berkshire got started, Companies with wide moat, Handling crisis, Buffett's Wit and Wisdom, Physical fitness, and many other interesting topics.

What I also like about this book:
1. More color photos and a photo index
2. Updates on Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway recent activity (Railroad purchase etc)
3. Recent activity in added in early chapters so I get the recent updates right away
4. Table of contents with catchy and interesting chapter titles
5. Chapters are short (a few pages max, many with only one or two pages), and not boring to read

What I would like to see (probably in future edition) is Warren Buffett's mistakes (not focusing on the mistakes itself, but more of how/what he learn from them, and his thought process going into making the decision, and whether the outcome changes his philosophies afterwards). I understand that most of them are mistakes of ommission rather than comission, nonetheless it is interesting and useful to learn them. Some of the examples: Not wanting to pay any more than $25M for Sees candies, Stop accumulating Walmart after the price hit a certain point, Buying and then booking losses on Conoco Phillips, Not booking gains on many of the stock holding when it is way overvalued. I know that Andy has covered many of these topics but probably a few back-to-back chapters or a deeper dive into some of these will be an interesting read.

I learn so much from Of Permanent Value, and I hope you enjoy and learn from this book as much as I do (if not more). I can't wait for the next edition and learn On the various stock selling by Berkshire, and what the conclusion about Goldman situation, and many others interesting topic that is happening this year.

I encourage all berkshire shareholders (and potential/future shareholders) to read this book to know more about the person in charge of your Berkshire investment (Warren is your partner). I also encourage all shareholders to go to the annual meeting while Mr. Buffett is still in charge and see him in action.

Now about the content of the book. You will learn a lot about Warren Buffett and his life, and not only investing topic (investing decisions that he made throughout his career) but his life principles, family, and business in general as well. You will learn about his first job delivering papers when he was 13 (he filed income tax and deducted the bike as business cost), and how he build his first business (pinball machine business), created Buffett partnership, break it up (liquidate), acquire berkshire mills, creating Berkshire Hathaway as investment vehicle, and many other great investment decision/story that he made (Geico, See's Candies, Dairy Queen, General Re, Coca Cola, Salomon, Washington Post, Gillette etc)

In my opinion, here are the 5 strategies that Warren Buffett uses:
1. Intrinsic Value
2. Margin of Safety
3. Temperament (discipline and understanding Mr.Market)
4. Circle of Competence (knowing what your circle of competence. knowing what you know, and knowing what you don't know)
5. Common Sense (which I think is the most important factor and encapsulate everything about Warren Buffett)

You will learn that Warren is very good with numbers (calculating numbers in his head) and memorizing so many facts and numbers. You will also learn that Warren is a man with a very good sense of humor.

Some of the Warren Buffet quotes/opinions/behaviors that I find very useful:
1. In looking for people to hire, you should look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence , and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you
2. Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful
3. Rule No. 1: Never lose money. Rule No. 2: Never forget Rule. No. 1
4. Price is what you pay. Value is what you get
5. It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minuted to ruin it. If you think about that you'll do things differently
6. It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price
7. You're neither right nor wrong because other people agree with you. You're right because your facts are right and your reasoning is right
8. Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing
9. Do what you love and work for whom you admire the most, and you've given yourself the best chance in life you can
10. The perfect amount of money to leave children is enough money so that they would feel they could do anything, but not so much that they would do nothing

There are so many things/chapters that I like on this book. Here are some of my favorites:

One is when Warren need to make a decision who would run Salomon ($150B institution with 8000 employees) within 2 days during their first crisis. There are 12 top-level managers that he interviewed. "This was the most important hire of my life", said Warren to the Columbia business students. The chapter explain his thought process of this candidate selection in detail. Warren mentioned that the good news (for the students and the candidate) is that he didn't ask what their grades were (laughter). Warren also said, "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. and if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. if you think about it, it's true, if you hire somebody without integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy" (laughter). And he conclude the topic with this statement which I think is very powerful: "Pick the kind of person to work for you that you want to marry your son or daughter. You won't go wrong". By the way, he picked Deryck Maughan by the way for his integrity.

Another chapter that I really like is how Warren put the audience (of more than 2000 people) through Business School in an electrifying two minutes (The chapter about "Generics"). See how Warren answer the question of "Will developments in the generic brand area hurt coca-cola?" which is a very important questions. I'll try not to spill too much and take the joy of reading this chapter yourself but he basically explains in a nutshell (with all the details and numbers) how business and competition works (and using several other example like Gillette, Marlboro, Sam Cola etc) and how he convinced the audience (and me as a reader) that coca cola is considered immune to generics. He explains how one can save $500 for smoking generic brand (vs Marlboro) which is a lot of money. While a man will probably will only save $11 per year by not using Gillette Sensor and probably leave band-aids on his face and an uncomfortable experience for opting for generics/lower quality blades. And for coca cola, the net profit margin is only 1 cents per serving (can) while a lot of the ingredients cost (such as the aluminium close to 6 cents a can, sugar 1.3 ounce per can or 1.75 cents etc) the same regardless for coke or other cola company.

The third chapter that I like is when Warren is being questioned by CEOs about what is his best advice for CEOs/leaders.. expecting to get some standard answers like honesty and loyalty.. Warren actually didn't even touch those areas (which I'm sure Warren do think those are also important).. but what Warren actually said is, "Set your expectation low, and you will rarely get dissapointed".

Last but not least, if I have to sum this book up (and Warren Buffett to some extent) in a word, I would use the word "WISDOM" to describe this book, though I have a strong feeling that Warren will disagree with me and think that the better word to describe is "COMMON SENSE"

A Masterful Biography

Andrew Kilpatrick is destined to be remembered as Warren Buffett's Boswell!

Whether you just want the enjoyment of reading about one of history's most interesting financial geniuses or you're endeavoring to learn his methods for your own portfolio, Andy Kilpatrick's new Trilogy, "Of Permanent Value" is the key. For serious students of Buffet, Berkshire, and Value Investing, there is nothing to compare with this dedicated work.

In his three volume edition, by means of approximately 1500+ well-captioned and interesting photos, a vast array of printed material, and his own sensitive and humorous style, Mr. Kilpatrick captures, and clearly defines, both the character of his subject, "The "Sage of Omaha", and the development of the Berkshire Hathaway Corporataion since its inception.

Andrew Kilpatrick is to be highly applauded for the time and dedication that were required to produce a biography of this magnitude. He has very candidly portrayed the complete life and times of Warren Buffet from his early childhood, during the challenging years of the Great Depression, to his present status as one of the world's wealthiest men. Buffett's many successes and his few failures are very fully chronicled by the author in this most recent work.

Kilpatrick leaves nothing out. The depth of his research enabled him to reveal an assortment of facts and trivia seldom encountered in other serious biographies. Not only does he write of Buffett's numerous successes and occassional failures, but in what similar work would the author enlighten you that his subject's underware is a product of Fruit of the Loom Company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway.

In this new trilogy, the author has, in fact, produced a dual biography. It is first and foremost the total story of Warren Buffett. Secondly, it is very likely the most complete insight into the founding and development of the Berkshire Hathaway corporation that has yet been compiled.

For the couch potato who merely wants to spend severral enjoyable evenings browsing through captioned pictures that tell the whole story of the Buffett family, friends, acquaintances, childhood, and the empire he structured, this is the book. For those who are more seriously inclined to do an in-depth study of both the character and the foibles of one of history's greatest financial minds, "Of Permanent Value", Andrew Kilpatrick's new, beautifully presented Trilogy, this is the Bible!

Buffet All You Need To Know, and More

There is so much wisdom and humor in these volumes that any serious investor should have this set on their bookshelf. Other than Graham and Dodd there is not much else one needs to explore the world of serious value investing. I have to confess that I am a front row Buffet fan and even when I think I know what I'm doing, I always can squeeze out more pearls of wisdom from these volumes. Andrew Kilpatrick is someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of Buffutology.
If your serious about understanding the Oracle don't miss this set, it surely is more valuable than three months of the Wall Street Journal!

Zero stars. I gave to pick one star, ite would let me submit my review otherwise. The heroine sucked. All her self doubt, all the time, up until the very end just ruined the story for me. She never just allowed love to happen. It was just horrible having to read pages of her second guessing herself.

Not Worth Buying

I bought this book thinking that I was going to get an extensive commentary about Alice In Wonderland. This book is by no means an in-depth commentary on the piece. There are no more than ten pages of commentary in the whole book. The rest of the book is just the actual text of Alice In Wonderland with large side-margins that occasionally include definitions of words or phrases.

Definitely one of the worst book purchases I have made in the last few years...

ONE OF THE BEST ENDGAME BOOKS YOU CAN BUY.

To those of you rated 1700 elo or higher and need Endgame training, this is for you. The goes over many kinds of endgames K+P K+R K+Q etc, and goes over advanced endgame concepts...this is what I liked most. I learned how to play out 100 types of Endgames. I was stuck at 1900 elo for a year. A few months with this book and now I am rated 2089. You can say I am a happy customer. 5 STARS...this book is an instant classic. If you don't have this in your chess library..well your missing out.

Essential Endgames for Strong Players

Here is a real classic of chess literature, one that probably should be in every serious player's chess library. As you may well know, Dvoretsky is widely considered one of the best, if not the very best chess instructors for advanced players in the world. This volume can be considered, in a way, the successor to Reuben Fine's 'Basic Chess Endings', a comprehensive and detailed look at what are termed theoretical chess endings. (With the advantage that there are far fewer errors in the current volume, and esoteric endings looked at in Fine, such as Q vs 4 pieces, are skipped here.) That is, these are endings that have very few or no pawns present, and so can be worked out to exact outcomes with best play by both sides. All essential endgames, such as the critical Lucena and Philador positions are covered, as are Bishops of both same and opposite colors, Queen endings, R vs minor piece, etc etc. A valuable feature is that approximately 400 (!) positions have been highlighted in blue text as being the most central ones to learn, so you can start with these, and then expand your endgame knowledge by going back and studying the other positions later. As a trainer w/ vast experience (and as a player of IM strength), you can be confident that you are learning the most essential endgames, and that you are getting instruction that is clearly and insightfully written. The only other modern volume to consider in place of this volume would be Mueller and Lamprecht's 'Fundamental Chess Endings', another thick tome that is also authoritative, and very well written and organized. Either one would be a superb choice for the advanced, dedicated player. (If you are compulsive, get both!!) More casual, lower rated players would be better served by picking more basic endgame works like Nunn's 'Understanding Chess Endgames" or 'Silman's Complete Endgame Course'. Once you master a book like Dvoretsky, go on to a book on strategic endgames (ones w/ more pawns, that cannot necessarily be definitively solved) like Shereshevsky or Mueller's separate book on strategic endgames. Master two of these volumes (one on theoretical endings, one on strategic ones), then do the work at the board during your games, and you will be able to go toe to toe with very strong players!

Sets the Standard

I have a print edition of the original and a Kindle edition of this expanded version among more than a dozen other endgame books. I spend as much time studying this text as all my other endgame books combined. Dvoretsky's writing is generally clear and precise. Although generally considered suited only for the strongest players, the text is layered in a way that players at many levels can find a place to begin, and then return for more as their skill improves. He covers the essential elements in each important endgame, then probes the depths, including correcting many oft-repeated errors in older classics.

Chapter 1
FIRST KISS

On a day like no other, she saw him running over a grassy hillside with the snowcapped Rocky Mountains in the background. Linda Wheeler was sitting on the passenger side of a baby blue Jeep. She had never seen anyone as alive as Freddie Steinmark. Here was the boy with the big, sparkling eyes and the smile that chased away her blues. The mere sight of him left her breathless.
Months earlier, in the fall of 1963, he had stormed into her life in the hallway of Manning Junior High. The eighth-grade girls, hoping to ogle Freddie that first day of school, had gathered near the front entrance, anticipating his arrival. They chattered excitedly about a heartthrob more celestial than Elvis Presley.
“I hear that Freddie Steinmark is around here someplace,” one of the girls loudly whispered.
“I’ve got my eyes wide open,” another gushed. “I might just kiss Freddie Steinmark straight on the lips when I see him.”
Linda could not have cared less at the time. Nothing on that first day of school in this strange place was going to make her happy. Against her will, her family had moved twelve miles from near downtown Denver to Wheat Ridge, a place a little too countrified for a girl from the city. This outpost seemed as distant from urban Denver as Memphis was to Mozambique. When the sun set over the Rockies, everyone headed home to watch The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett, then went straight to bed, or so it seemed.
That first week of September, Linda was walking into an alien world she could not comprehend. Even more troubling was the realization that this strange journey into nowhere was just beginning. In two years, she would enter Wheat Ridge High School, where the cheerleaders wore overalls and the team was called the Farmers. At football games, one of the male students actually dressed like a hayseed rode around on a mule named Daisy. The drill team square-danced at halftime. Any day, Linda expected to see goats grazing on the football field.
Linda did not need to remind herself why the Wheelers had moved to the end of the earth. Simply, her mother was seeking a controlled environment where she could raise her two youngest daughters, Linda and Shannon. Marion Wheeler did not want to endure another teenage pregnancy, as she had with her oldest daughter a year earlier. In Wheat Ridge, she knew she could keep the reins on Linda and Shannon and shoo the boys away.
Linda wore black horn-rimmed glasses and a blue dress. Before heading off to school that morning, she peered into the mirror at a girl she judged to have average looks. Boys rarely gave her the time of day. Given her mother’s attitude toward the opposite sex, she wondered if she would ever get a date. A boy with the status and charm of Freddie Steinmark would never show interest in her and, if he did, she wasn’t feeling all that sociable anyway.
As Freddie swaggered into the building that morning, toting a passel of books and motoring like an all-district scatback, every head turned to see the raven-haired youngster with the Pepsodent smile. Amazingly, Linda felt his big brown eyes watching her. The girls were standing in line outside homeroom, waiting for the bell to ring. Freddie smiled and winked at her. How is this possible? Why is he not looking at the other girls? Freddie walked a little farther down the hall, turned, and set his eyes on Linda once more. She felt light-headed. She knew the others were jealous. Why is Mr. Wonderful stuck on the new girl? We’ve known him a lot longer than her.
In Wheat Ridge, Freddie Steinmark was bigger than the Beatles. They loved to talk about “Fast Freddie” and his athletic gift. They said that before long he would be playing halfback at the University of Colorado, then it would be off to the pros. A devout Catholic who attended mass almost every day, he also made straight A’s. He was the hero of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. He had once played on a Denver midget league football team that won every game for eight straight seasons.
Freddie was brimming with so much energy that his vitality seemed to flow through his pores. The girls around Wheat Ridge thought he was the sweetest boy they had ever met, but the boys who competed against him in sports knew better. The kid possessed a hard edge honed by a pushy father and some pushier coaches. When Freddie walked onto the football field, or the basketball court, or the baseball diamond, look out. Winning in Freddie’s world was the only way to have fun. Little wonder that Mickey Mantle was his hero and why Freddie was idolized in the same manner as “The Mick.”
Linda knew virtually nothing about sports, having grown up with two sisters who did not know if a football was blown up or stuffed. Her father Selby MacMillan Wheeler was an M.I.T. graduate and a well-known architect in the Denver area. He was not the type of man who would sit in front of the TV, watching the weekend games and memorizing batting averages. So the idea of Freddie Steinmark being the best athlete in the school did not impress her. Still, she could not get over those eyes, that smile, and the way he carried himself.
As the days passed, Freddie seemed to be everywhere. One day, she peered up from her desk in homeroom and saw him walking toward her. He casually sat down in the desk next to hers. For the next fifteen minutes, until the bell rang, he stared at Linda without saying a word. The same routine followed the next day and the next.
Linda was beginning to wonder if Freddie was ever going to speak when Rocco Rofrano, another eighth grader, sidled up next to her in the hallway. Rocco was a handsome boy and he was one of Freddie’s few non-jock friends, but they were extremely tight, going all the way back to kindergarten.
“You know, Freddie is really crazy about you,” Rocco said. “He’s liked you a lot since the day he saw you.”
“Come on, Rocco,” Linda said. “ Are you being square with me? Are you sure Freddie’s talking about me?”
“He only has eyes for you, Linda.”
“So why doesn’t he talk to me?”
“Because he doesn’t know what to say.”
“So why does he sit and stare at me?”
Rocco grinned. “Because he likes you. I mean, he likes you a lot.”
Linda felt a mixture of excitement and frustration as she walked away from Rocco that day. Boys were a new phenomenon in her life, and she really wanted a boyfriend. She knew, however, that all eighth graders were still fighting off inhibitions. This agonizing game of silence could drag on forever.
Little did Freddie know that Linda was soon watching him—from afar. She went to the junior high football games and, at first, was completely confused by the confounded system of first downs and other assorted silliness. One thing was certain about the Manning Junior High games: Freddie Steinmark was the star who carried the ball on practically every play. He scored most of the touchdowns. He played offense and defense and never left the field. He was the reason the band played. When the games were over, the cheerleaders chased him all the way to the locker room.
As football was winding down in the late fall, and the heavy snowfalls arrived, Freddie took his game to the gymnasium, where he dominated the basketball court. To Linda, it seemed that no one at Manning Junior High cheered for anyone but Freddie Steinmark. Does he possibly know how popular he is?
The next day, she shook her head and sat down at her desk, waiting for Freddie to come bee-bopping into her life once more. She knew he would have nothing to say.

Out on the rolling farmland of Wheat Ridge, the winds were soft and cool in the spring as the sun began to warm the farmland stretching west. The basketball season was almost over in late March and Freddie soon would be lacing up his baseball cleats.
Linda was sitting in the Jeep, basking in the sunshine, waiting for her sister Shannon to turn the ignition key, when she spotted Freddie running toward her. She thought there must be some kind of mistake. His dark skin glistened and she was mesmerized by everything about him. She prayed he would open his mouth.
Shannon Wheeler, sitting behind the wheel, almost panicked when she saw Freddie tearing over the hill. “Oh, my God, what is he doing?” she yelped. She released the clutch and said, “Linda, let’s get out of here!”
“No, no, no!” Linda yelled. “Wait!”
“Gotta go,” Shannon said. “What would Mother say?”
“Stop! Dammit!”
The windows were rolled down because of the beautiful weather. Within seconds, Freddie’s face was inches from Linda’s. She had never seen such a happy boy. He flashed the smile she would never forget.
“Wanna go out?” he blurted. The voice seemed strange. She had never heard it.
“Well, sure, Freddie Steinmark,” Linda said. “Of course I would like to go out with you. What are we gonna do?”
“How about let’s go to dinner tomorrow night after the game?”
“Why not?” she said, turning slowly and smiling at Shannon.
Shannon rolled her eyes as her left foot searched for the clutch. “Can we leave now, Linda?”
“One second,” she said. Then she turned to Freddie. “Where do you want to meet?”
Freddie named the restaurant. Again, their eyes met and they shook hands.
As the Jeep pulled away, Linda’s eyes were locked onto Freddie’s. She would think about him for the rest of the day. But how in the name of Pikes Peak was she going to explain this to her mother?

Excellent......

I have to disclose that I played football in high school in Texas in the late 60s and was a fan of the Texas Longhorns. As a result, I knew about Freddy Steinmark's illness and the success of that team. However, I wasn't that familiar with his character or with the intricacies of the UT program. Dent has done an incredible job in describing both and drawing the reader in to that world. I highly recommend this book.

Having read Dent's "The Junction Boys" and "12 Mighty Orphans" I was looking forward to reading "Courage Beyond the Game - The Freddy Steinmark Story". Once again, Dent does not disappoint. Truly an inspirational story of an incredibly courageous young man who fought all odds to start on a national championship football team (the University of Texas) and then playing his final year while hiding what turned out to be a deadly bone cancer. Dent does a fantastic job of capturing the era and takes you through a wide range of emotions in this great story.

Dent's Steinmark Book is First Class

Freddie Steinmark is a near - mythic figure in Longhorn lore, and Jim Dent does a terrific job of capturing the emotion and the passion of this incredible young man. You do not have to be a UT fan to enjoy it -- or appreciate the courage and the spirit that Steinmark's memory has embodied for 40 years. Freddie's roommate told me recently, "Freddie always did exactly the right thing at exactly the right time." How many people can we say THAT about today ? Congratuations to Jim Dent for keeping Freddie's inspiration alive.

Reg Local joined the police in 1990. In 1995 he qualified as a class 1 advanced driver and worked as a traffic officer until 1999 when he qualified as a police advanced driving instructor. He has taught everyone from learners to experts and has a passion for sharing his knowledge and experience.

Excellent book! Lots of detailed info!

I have done RoSPA and IAM advanced tests myself and this book is an excellent source of information about safe advanced driving. It is written by an expert and can be used to refresh your knowledge and skills about advanced driving or put them on a higher level. Written with humour and passion in a systematic way. Really enjoyed it. Reg, thank a lot for the book!

there is much here to recommend the book

Although written for British drivers, and thus a bit confusing as to terminology and what side of the road, there is much here to recommend the book. I learned some stuff, and I used to BE a police driving instructor. Let me tell you, if I'd had to go through the training those guys do, I might've opted for another career.
