In Book Two, Arthur, Francis, and Vita finally meet up with Bill, now living in New Orleans, and get involved with a small-time criminal and a scheme to bring undocumented immigrants to the States from Cuba. The unrelenting dreariness of drugs, petty crime, and unappealing sex may appeal to readers of Adam Rapp, but Kine has bigger things on his mind than Rapp’s nihilism. About the Author
Daniel Kine is author of the novels Between Nowhere and Happiness (2009, Smallhand Press) and forthcoming Up Nights (2013, Ooligan Press). He was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1984, and studied philosophy and literature in San Francisco, Mexico City, Guatemala, and Portland, Oregon. His writing has appeared in several publications, including Modern Review, Q Poetry, Pathways, and Indie Literature Now. His fiction has been described as "concerning the rootlessness of modern youth." Common themes in his novels revolve around suicide, affectlessness, drug use, and the struggles of individual freedom. He lives in London.

We want to pull away from the cold reality that is Up Nights, but we don't: we can't. Kine keeps our revulsions to the black hole that is abject poverty in check by pulling us into the characters inner thoughts and allows us to feel hope as his characters finally work out the details of their journey, this road trip that they must take together.

In this way the characters in Kine's novel, Up Nights, are not altogether different than coffee that is fire roasted here in Portland: hot, soulful and dark, and like the coffee, Up Nights is to be savored slowly, for it is here where the rich flavor of this novel is best enjoyed.

A seedy adventure through the grimy parts of life and America

Rating:

I'll be honest, I didn't expect to like this book. With the comparisons to Kerouac's work and the fact that the characters are all into drugs and other things like that I just didn't think it'd be my cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kine was able to pull me in with his monumental character work. Bravo. 5 out of 5. You should definitely think about buying this book.

Review:

I want to start by saying that those who are comparing this book to Jack Kerouac's On the Road are both accurate and inaccurate. It's fair to say that this work is analogous to that book, but only insofar as the framework goes. The guts of this book are very different, for a different time where different issues need to be addressed. It's Kerouac for the "now".

This book, unlike On the Road, does not require you to be able to adapt to the odd style of the author; Daniel Kine's prose is easy to understand and follow, even if it is a little bit basic. Where Kine shines as a writer is in his ability to highlight some interesting visual details and in his character building. I usually don't like druggy, scummy characters in my books even if the idea is to see them through the lens of poverty or whatever, but Kine does such a great job of adding dimension to the characters that you can't help but become invested in them. That's not to say that all of the characters are equally fleshed out or that you'll become attached to all of them, but in their own ways they are all distinctive (which is something not all writers can do, sadly).

This book is a conundrum; it's arresting and beautiful on the one hand, but it's seedy and dark with little room for redemption on the other hand. It's worth your time and your consideration, though, that's for sure.

A Road Novel for the Turn of the Century

Daniel Kine's book is a story that attempts to unravel what it's like coming of age around the turn of the millennium and realizing that all the opportunity we've been told is out there might not really exist. The characters take a journey from town to town in something of a fever dream as they experiment with experiences that straddle the line in their character between growing into adulthood and growing out of childhood illusions about the world.

The tone varies between cold detachment, wry humor, and a simmering unease or anger that an entire generation of young folks can't quite put their finger on. Feeling somewhat autobiographical, I'm willing to bet that this book is in some ways Daniel's own attempt to figure out an identity as a modern American adult. It hashes out the pros and cons of giving in to sets of values and ways of living that aren't your own or allowing one's self to drop out and just seek comfort and escape. The scary part is, that permanent escape may not exist.

This book is not for the faint of heart but is a worthy read for anyone out there trying to make their way in a world changing as rapidly as they are.

About the Author

For more than twenty years, Jay Lehmann has taught at College of San Mateo, where he has received the Shiny Apple Award for excellence in teaching. He has worked on a NSF-funded grant to study classroom assessment and has performed research on collaborative directed-discovery learning. Jay has served as the newsletter editor for CMC3 (California Mathematics Council, Community College) for twelve years. He has presented at more than seventy-five conferences, including AMATYC, ICTCM, and T3, where he has discussed curve fitting and sung his "Number Guy" song.

 

Jay plays in a rock band called The Procrastinistas, who play at various clubs in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Jay, his wife Keri, and son Dylan reside. He plays a number of instruments including bass, guitar, piano, violin, and baritone. In addition to his elementary, intermediate, and combined algebra textbooks, Jay is currently writing a heist novel for high school students, which he hopes will be published before Dylan outgrows it. Dylan, a devoted drummer and artist, drafted many of the cartoons that are included in Jay's textbooks.

 

In the words of the author:

            Before writing my algebra series, it was painfully apparent that my students couldn't relate to the applications in the course. I was plagued with the question, "What is this good for?" To try to bridge that gap, I wrote some labs, which facilitated my students in collecting data, finding models via curve fitting, and using the models to make estimates and predictions. My students really loved working with the current, compelling, and authentic data and experiencing how mathematics truly is useful.

            My students' response was so strong that I decided to write an algebra series. Little did I know that to realize this goal, I would need to embark on a 15-year challenging journey, but the rewards of hearing such excitement from students and faculty across the country has made it all worthwhile! I'm proud to have played even a small role in raising peoples' respect and enthusiasm for mathematics.

             have tried to honor my inspiration: by working with authentic data, students can experience the power of mathematics. A random-sample study at my college suggests that I am achieving this goal. The study concludes that students who used my series were more likely to feel that mathematics would be useful in their lives (P-value 0.0061) as well as their careers (P-value 0.024).

            The series is excellent preparation for subsequent courses; in particular, because of the curve fitting and emphasis on interpreting the contextual meaning of parameters, it is an ideal primer for statistics. In addition to curve fitting, my approach includes other types of meaningful modeling, directed-discovery explorations, conceptual questions, and of course, a large bank of skill problems. The curve-fitting applications serve as a portal for students to see the usefulness of mathematics so that they become fully engaged in the class. Once involved, they are more receptive to all aspects of the course.

About the Author

Joseph D. Sloan has been working with computers since the mid-1970s.He began using Unix as a graduate student in 1981, first as anapplications programmer and later as a system programmer and systemadministrator. Since 1988 he has taught computer science, first atLander University and more recently at Wofford College where he can befound using the software described in this book.

Good, but completely out of date

This was a great book when it was published in 2004 (over 12 years ago), but is now completely out of date. OpenMosix is no longer maintained, and probably shouldn't be used, to cite just one example. The OSCAR project hasn't been updated since 2011, LAM/MPI was retired in 2015. If you are completely new to linux compute clusters, it still contains some useful information, but generally nothing can be regarded as technically reliable. Oddly, this is yet another technology where there haven't been any subsequent editions or more recent books on the same subject. I don't get this, because, for example, ROCKS clusters are still ubiquitously used in scientific research on campuses all over the world, and the documentation isn't that great.

OSCAR info badly out of date

I recently installed an OSCAR cluster on our PowerEdge SC1425 servers; Since the book just came out this year, I thought it would provide some more up to date insights into items that are not included in the install manual.

No such luck, you will find no mention of the need to upgrade SIS if you have SCSI or S-ATA drives, there is no information on Peter Mueller's kernel, or why you may need it. Or why the whole process seems to work but the nodes never can boot (OSCAR sometimes makes a bad initrd.img - check the size).

This book is NOT a good OSCAR resource, if you're a newbie it just leave you feeling frustrated as to why it sounds so simple and just doesn't work.

Forget openMosix part.

Just wanted to mention that openMosix - which is proposed in the book as an attractive component for the cluster, was discontinued in March, 2008. Right now I'm working with other parts such as Oscar, using the book more as a guideline than as a howto manual - nevertheless, it handles a very easy language and explains very clearly most concepts.

Horror Writing for TV

The Writing Dead: Talking Terror with TV's Top Horror Writers was published March 3, 2015 by University Press of Mississippi. The book is divided up into 4 main parts with an introduction to the book and acknowledgements.

“I just write about what scares me. When I was a kid, my mother used to say, ‘Think of the worst thing that you can, and if you say it out loud then it won’t come true.’ And that’s probably been the basis of my career.” -Stephen King

Each section of the book has interviews with writers related to that topic. There are quite a variety of writers interviewed including those who write or wrote for Hannibal, Dexter, Bates Motel, True Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Grimm, Angel, The Walking Dead, Hemlock Grove, Being Human, American Horror Story, X-Files, and Millenium. Each part of the book that focuses on a particular writer or series type, starts with a brief synopsis of why they were included and then goes into a transcript of an interview by Thomas Fahy with the author.

What I found interesting about the book is somewhat the usual things that one would take away from such a book, how the writer’s come up with their ideas and write. I enjoyed reading about all of the authors and found it interesting to see some of the other things in their career that they wrote before they came to horror and how it affected what they wrote.

I ended up giving this book 4 stars. I would recommend it to others as a good read or as a gift for someone who enjoys learning more about the behind the scenes writing of their favorite horror programs and movies. It’s interesting to see the connections between a movie that has become a series or a series of books that becomes a tv series. It’s also interesting to see how a particular writer’s previous projects affected what they in turn wrote for the horror programs.

An enjoyable, engaging book

Some excellent insights into writnig horror, based on thirteen interviews from some of the best horror writers out there. Since I know most of the TV series the writers worked on, I was very intrigued to read more about their thoughts and insights. An enjoyable, engaging book that fans of those TV shows will no doubt love. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

An interesting read.

I don’t review all that many non-fiction books. The reason I chose this one when it was offered on the Netgalley website is plain. It’s published by a university press and it’s the only way I was ever going to be able to afford to read it.

It’s exactly what it says on the cover. A series of interviews with people involved in writing horror series for TV. They include some of television’s biggest names—Carlton Cuse (Lost and Bates Motel), Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies), David Greenwalt (Angel and Grimm), Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator series, Aliens, and The Abyss), Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica), Brian McGreevy (Hemlock Grove), Alexander Woo (True Blood), James Wong (The X-Files, Millennium, American Horror Story, and Final Destination), Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files and Millennium), Richard Hatem (Supernatural, The Dead Zone, and The Mothman Prophecies), Scott Buck (Dexter), Anna Fricke (Being Human), and Jim Dunn (Haven).

It’s obvious from the get-go that it’s centred firmly on US TV, so you get the writer of the American version of ‘Being Human’, rather than the original British version. There’s a gaping hole where ‘Afterlife’ and ‘Ghostwatch’ author, Stephen Volk should be. Also the time issues involved in producing such a book preclude the inclusion of the writers of ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘The Strain’, or ‘True Detective’ being included.

It’s still a very interesting read, and it’s a huge shame that the hefty price tag will keep it out of the hands of many potential readers. As one would expect, the various interviewees have differing opinions on what works, and what doesn’t, but it’s actually quite surprising how often they do agree.

I very much enjoyed reading the book, but I have to be honest and admit that it wouldn’t have been worth the price tag, had I bought a hard copy. It is, however, relatively cheap compared to many such publications. I suspect there will eventually be a Kindle edition, but in my experience of university press books, it probably won’t be a great deal cheaper than the hardcover.

I, like some others, am writing not to complain about the book but the service. The page promotes an edition whose cover says 375 R&B hits and the description says "a hundred and twenty-five hits added to the second edition." Well, naturally I imagined this is what I would be getting but instead I got an edition which has 305 songs and says "over 250 hits". So I got jerked out of 70 songs. It may not seem like that big a deal but it is disappointing and it is, to some extent, false advertising.

You need airforce pilot eyesight to use this!

I played a few of the songs on guitar, and the chords seem correct but could they make the type any smaller? I don't think so! If you don't have the music right up close and with good lighting, a person (especially over 40!) can't hope to be able to enjoy using this book.

I was very disappointed--great selection of songs, but no hope to be able to use the book in a party environment.

One-Stop R&B

I've had this book over two years, and I've had lots of fun working my way through it (as well as jamming with friends). It's packed cover-to-cover not only with Stax and Motown songs, but also a lot of 70s soul and late 1950s rock. Virtually every big hit by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and the Supremes are here along with a lot of Otis Redding, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and the Jackson 5ive. I've found the arrangements are pretty accurate, and it's a lot cheaper buying the songs this way rather than in some other formats. This would be an ideal book to have if you are in a wedding or party band and are expected to know and play a dozen or so classic R & B songs.

There are a couple of caveats. First - this is fake book format. Fake books give you the chords and leads on a staff, but the rest of the song is up to you. Professional gigging musicians constantly 'fake' arrangements, and this should not be a problem if you are jamming to these songs. Second - Hal Leonard seems to have wanted to cram in as many songs as possible, limiting the songs to just one or two pages. This means the print is small, and will be especially irritating in a dim room. Third - there's no TAB for guitar. Normally I wouldn't complain about that, but when you're dealing with so many songs with tasty guitar parts, a little TAB would have helped.

Still, this is a great treasury of great songs. Anyone who grew up with Motown and Stax and who plays an instrument will love this one. Furthermore, there seems to be less overlap between this book and other Hal Leonard volumes than other collections I've seen, so there's a lot of value for the money.
