This exciting study sheds much new light on the vexed Jung-Freud partnership and on the current status of psychoanalysis. At its hub is Sabina Spielrein (1886-1941), one of the first women psychoanalysts, whom Jung treated for hysteria when she was 18. She evidently fell in love with Jung, and he broke off their intense relationship to avert public scandal. Spielrein found in Freud a friend and mentor, confiding to him the details of her attachment to Jung. Kerr, a clinical psychologist and historian, asserts that Freud attempted to use what he knew about Jung's personal life to exert ideological control over the psychoanalytic movement. In Kerr's scenario, Jung apparently was aware of Freud's secret affair with his sister-in-law Minna Bernays--an affair which is denied by many biographiers, but that Kerr defends as plausible based on Jung's explicit testimony and on recent scholarship. It was after Jung threatened to retaliate by revealing what he knew about Freud's personal life, Kerr maintains, that their collaboration dissolved. He argues that both men had an opportunity to make psychoanalysis an open, scientifically grounded discipline, but instead succumbed to ambition, dogma and personal animus. Kerr also charges that Freud and Jung suppressed Spielrein's own fertile theory of the unconscious, which conceived of sexuality as fusion rather than pleasure.

Spielrein, one of the first women psychoanalysts, was Jung's patient, student, and lover; later, she was Freud's colleague in Vienna. Her diary and letters were previously discussed in Aldo Carotenuto's A Secret Symmetry: Sabina Spielrein Between Jung and Freud ( LJ 5/15/82). Using these and other sources, including Jung's letters to Spielrein, clinical psychologist and historian Kerr reconstructs Spielrein's relationship with Jung and Freud, portraying her as an influential if peripheral figure during their period of collaboration. Kerr has written a fascinating history of psychoanalysis focusing on its origin as a clinical method of psychotherapy. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.

A solid new interpretation of the short-lived but oft-analyzed collaboration between Freud and Jung, in which the mysterious Sabina Spielrein figures prominently. Using Spielrein's correspondence and journals--discovered in the 1970's and first appearing in Aldo Carotenuto's A Secret Symmetry (1982)--Kerr traces a fascinating, credible web of influence and cross-fertilized ideas that he weaves skillfully into a record of psychoanalytic history. Spielrein--a young, neurotic Russian who was in Zurich to receive psychoanalytical treatment and attend medical school--was Jung's patient and, later, his lover; but even though a falling out prompted her to move to Vienna to become a Freudian, the ties between analyst and patient remained strong--so much so that Kerr contends that Spielrein can be seen as the model for Jung's concept of the ``anima'' (the female part of the male psyche). By chronicling this progression of events from 1904 to the final, fragmentary evidence of the pair's contact in the 1920's--before Spielrein returned to Russia in hopes of building a psychoanalytic movement, only to run afoul of Stalin-- the depth to which Jung and Spielrein influenced each other's thinking appears clear. Spielrein left her mark on Freud as well, in the form of a 1912 essay positing a link between an individual's desire for death and the sexual instinct. Most important to Kerr's history, however, is the intense interplay between Jung and Freud, with the decay of their mutual admiration into animosity and recrimination hastened by Spielrein's presence. More attentive to Jung's side of the equation, perhaps, but still a neat, substantial piece of psychoanalytic puzzle-solving, provocative and eminently readable. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. Very detailed

I bought this after seeing the 2011 eponymous movie ("A Dangerous Method") which stirred me to get more information about the people in it, especially Spielrein, Gross, Jung, & Freud. Although my PhD is in clinical psychology and I went through a long psychoanalysis ("ego psychology flavor"), all that was before much of the information presented in this book was uncovered and came to light.

Kerr's book is based on his PhD dissertation and sometimes seems not far removed from that style. It has patches, like puddles after a scattered heavy rain, that are extremely detailed and which would be tedious reading for any but, e.g., the very few needing those details for their references such as the master's thesis on which they're working. However one can skip over those sections and resume reading where the text resumes a more narrative approach. I'm not sorry at all that I read the book and appreciate that it supplied most of the information I wanted as well as spurring me to find out more.

Way too technical and detailed for my tastes. It is a book written for someone studying to be a psychologist or analyst as opposed to an interesting story about the men and their research and methods. Not a story for a layman interested in human psychology.

Accurate translations, great for travel or as a learning tool

I don't trust any other dictionary! I studied 4 years in university and checked thoroughly if the words/phrases that I knew were correct and they were! It also has some example sentences and situational uses of words. Just be careful with Korean since there can be many words to choose from for the same meaning, depending on the situation. For example, "broken/to break" has SO many verbs depending on what the noun is-- but luckily it is all listed in this dictionary!! It has romanization which can help new students as well. A bit large for having as a pocket dictionary, but full of info and small enough to be in a purse or small travel bag as you explore Korea.

I really dislike the romanized pronunciation system in this book; it's a challenge to use most of the time. Otherwise, it's good. The range of definitions is wide enough that I can use it often and the definitions themselves are concise and efficient.

The issue of reparations in America provokes a lot of interest, but the public debate usually occurs at the level of historical accounting: “Who owes what for slavery?” This book attempts to get past that question to address racial restitution within the framework of larger societal interests. For example, the answer to the “why reparations?” question is more than the moral of payment for an injustice done in the past. Ronald Walters suggests that, insofar as the impact of slavery is still very much with us today and has been reinforced by forms of postslavery oppression, the objective of racial harmony will be disrupted unless it is recognized with the solemnity and amelioration it deserves. The author concludes that the grand narrative of black oppression in the United States—which contains the past and present summary of the black experience—prevents racial reconciliation as long as some substantial form of racial restitution is not seriously considered. This is “the price” of reconciliation.

The method for achieving this finding is grounded in comparative politics, where the analyses of institutions and political behaviors are standard approaches. The author presents the conceptual difficulties involved in the project of racial reconciliation by comparing South African Truth and Reconciliation and the demand for reparations in the United States.

Rip off of Stormdrane's Blog and others!!!

I liked these projects the first time... when I saw them on Stormdrane's Blog. None of these ideas are new. It is an unwritten rule in paracord culture to state where one found the project; example Stormdrane, JD Lenzen, Todd Mikkelsen, etc. I can find most of these ideas on Stormdrane's blog: flashlight wrap, turks, lanyard, fob... the list goes on and on! I also didn't like how the author assumes the reader will know how to end the projects. Also, almost every chapter refers to reader to another page to find the weave. I hate these kind of books. I wish I knew this before I bought it. I would not have wasted my money.

I Returned The Book

I was most disappointed by the small number (12) of actual projects. It went over about 18 different knots but not in step by step fashion. The simpler knots were no problem but the more complex knots were shown in loose form. An intermediate to advanced paracorder could follow them, but overall, this book was just not what I was looking for.

Really not much substance. A few projects, that's all. I really dislike the use & recommendation of tools where NO instruction is given as to how to make them. Reliance on commercial jigs? Really? Is this a book or an infomercial? Given its failings, I can't recommend it. Find another source, one that's more complete.
