About the Author

Mickie Mueller is an award-winning and critically acclaimed artist of fantasy, fairy, and myth. She is an ordained Pagan minister and has studied Natural Magic, Fairy Magic and Celtic tradition. She is also a Reiki healing master/teacher in the Usui Shiki Royoho Tradition. Mickie enjoys creating magical art full of fairies, goddesses, and beings of folklore. She works primarily in a mix of colored pencil and watercolor infused with magical herbs corresponding to her subject matter.

Mickie is the illustrator of The Well Worn Path and The Hidden Path decks, the writer/illustrator of The Voice of the Trees and A Celtic Divination Oracle, and the illustrator of The Mystical Cats Tarot. Since 2007, Mickie has been a regular article and illustration contributor to several of the Llewellyn periodicals. She resides in Missouri.

Amazing book, must read, must own

A well written, informative, easy to read (and learn from!) amazing book by Mickie Mueller. A must have for your collection book. Mickie writes in an easy to understand, entertaining way that makes sense and is easy to memorize for practical use. Hope to get more books written by her as well as collect the rest of this series for my personal use and gifts.

a fun book

This is a fun book. It is a satire that takes place in 1964 and involves ex-debutante Maxie Mainwaring exploring career paths while getting caught up in some mob activities. It is full of earnest exclamations, alliteration, and the vocabulary of the time. The sex scenes are mild but are described with humorous analogies pertinent to the time period.

Yes, this is another 5 star review. But this book deserves it. It's a fun, light-hearted (and maybe light-headed) read about the adventures of rogue debutante Maxie Mainwaring and the denizens of the Magdalena Arms women's residence. Maxie is disinherited by her bossy mother and forced to get a jobs. More accurately, she is forced to get a series of jobs which put her on the trail of a dreaded Scandinavian crime syndicate, run by an unexpected 'queenpin.'
'Maxie Mainwaring' has been called a spoof of 50s pulp fiction. Not being an expert on 50s pulp fiction, I can't confirm or deny, but it was a fun read. I see the author has at least one other book on the denizens of the Magdalena Arms and another (Dolly Dingle, Lesbian Landlady) coming out in September. I'll probably give those a try. She also has a book of lesbian horse stories, but I'm not sure about that. I'm not really into horses.

Excellent series for beginners learning German!

This German reader is excellent practice for a beginner reading German. I started off learning German on Duolingo, but I grew very tired of that after a couple months — it was a nice kick-starter though. After that I studied strictly grammar for a few months which included small amounts of reading within the book. Due to the lack of reading practice, I reached a point where I had to refer back to different grammar rules (some simple ones) more often than I would like. I realized I was greatly in need of more practice with all of the grammar I was learning. I have a few older German readers in hard copy and some German texts, but I still wasn't quite ready to read them and I was referring to a dictionary far too often. So, I checked out this German reader and it was exactly what I needed. It helps you build your vocabulary with simple stories and gives you the practice you need to solidify that grammar foundation. The layout and the method used in these readers (3 volumes) is perfect. I have all three downloaded on my Kindle. I feel very confident that after I complete all of these readers, I will be well prepared for the old German readers made up of selections from classic German literature, and also ready to dive into Grimm's Märchen.

"First German Reader for beginners bilingual for speakers of English" so far seems to be a fairly decent product to use during the developmental stages of learning German.

As someone who is very much into finding the best ways to help others learn, I'm always interested in putting together the best ways for me to learn something. Now, understand that there is no one single product or even one single approach that is sufficient for learning any subject, whether it's language or computer technology or re-keying a door lock, but an often-overlooked method is to start from the beginning, just like you did in learning your own native language. The point of this book is to start you off, as an adult, as though you were in elementary school, and bring you along from that point.

For me, this works very well, especially when paired with something like Michel Thomas's language learning system.

Anyhow, this product arrived in a very timely manner, was very reasonably priced as far as anything language-learning goes, and I would definitely do business with this seller again.

Ausgezeichnete Einführung in die deutsche Sprache für den Anfänger

I purchased this book as a tool to use with my students who, along with other similar books, have improved their vocabulary dramatically. I would recommend this to anybody who would like to start learning German from a very basic level.
I took one star off because of the messy pronunciation guide. A complete novice completely unfamiliar with the sound of German and with no access to audio of the alphabet would be pronouncing it incorrectly, were he/she to use this as his/her only guide. The letter 'c' is pronounced 'tseh' (not 'say') and the letter 'ß', when spelling out a word, is pronounced 'ess-tset' (that is the German letter 's' ('ess') and 'z' ('tset). Also, the pronunciation of the letter 'u' is shown in the book to be pronounced 'ueh' (huh?) and 'ü' is shown to be pronounced 'uyuh'... There are much easier ways of indicating German sounds for English speakers, so I'm not sure what the author was thinking when she wrote this chapter. So, anybody wanting to know how to pronounce the German alphabet, please don't use this as a reference. This is the only negative thing I have to say about this book and would recommend it to anyone.

About the Author

Rob Carter is Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has served as a visiting professor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He is the author of American Typography Today, Typographic Design: The Great Typefaces, the five-volume Working with Type series, and Digital Color and Type. He is also coauthor of Meggs: Making Graphic Design History.

The late Philip B. Meggs was School of the Arts Research Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University; visiting faculty at Syracuse University and the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland; and contributing editor to Print magazine. He authored more than a dozen books and 150 articles and papers on design and typography, including a section on graphic design in Encyclopedia Britannica.

The late Ben Day was Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also taught at Boston University and had been a Visiting Designer at the University of Connecticut.

Sandra Maxa is Director of the Graphic Design Post Baccalaureate Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, has served as visiting faculty at the Pratt Institute, and has taught at Parsons The New School for Design and at Rutgers University–Newark

Good way to see the evolution of Harry

I had to do an average of the stories I read here which came to 4.5 stars, which is pretty darn great for me. I am a total Dresden junky, love me some Harry! Each story gave me another side of Harry, in some instances a side I may not have had a chance to see before since the situation occurred outside the main novels. There was not one story I would give less than a three and most were at at least a four. The writing was always tight, even if the first story was a little less detailed, it was still well worth the time. Each story seamlessly flowed into the next advancing and opening the story along with the characters.

There were three stories which I enjoyed more than others and gave five stars. The first story was It's My Birthday, Too which revolved around Harry's half brother and the fact that Harry really does not know how to deal with family issues. I liked this one because it shows how close Thomas and Harry have grown since finding out about each other. It's not every day you discover the only other family you have is a vampire. Thomas is helping one of his employees with a LARPing group at the mall, Harry is delivering his gift, and something very bad is about to happen.

My second favorite story was The Warrior, which had the retired knight Michael in it. When Michael and the knights were first introduced I was very happy to see them. Here was something I had never seen before and some very interesting people. Someone seems to be targeting Michael and his family, sending pictures of them to Harry as a warning. While Harry tries to find out who is after the ex-knight, Michael does not fear for himself but his family. What this person wants could cause more trouble than solve it.

The final favorite in this anthology of good stories was Last Call. Finally a chance to get a closer look at Mac. A psychic compulsion is placed on the crates containing his beer which of course transfers to the beer itself. Harry was just planning on having a beer and a steak sandwich but finds utter chaos and a plot that needs to be solved before all hell breaks lose.

All I can really say is that it is Harry Dresden and I love Harry in all his sarcastic, gloomy, sad sack, wizardly ways. If you have enjoyed the Dresden Files in the past this will only make you want more.

A fun and thoughtful collection of stories

More for Dresden fans than for people just starting the books, these stories add depth to many of Harry's friendships and relationships. Most of the stories were previously published in anthologies that I didn't buy so it was nice being able to read them all. The novelette Backup is one that I picked up and really enjoyed.
The stories start with the first, previously unpublished Harry Dresden short story. It reminds me of looking at school photos in a way. You can see the progression of both Mr. Butcher's ability to write a short, tight story and of Harry Dresden as a character.
The stories go into more depth about the Alphas and about Thomas, explaining a lot more about Harry's relationship with them. There is also a lot of great Harry and Karrin interaction.
Aftermath didn't answer the big questions, but since so many of the short stories developed the main characters in Aftermath, it was a good look at how they could work with each other.
The stories aren't as dark as the series has become. Some of them were thoughtful,exploring themes of responsibility and consequence of choices. There were many laugh out loud moments, the humor that you expect in this series.
It's just a snack to tide readers over until the next novel, but it's a very satisfying snack.

A dose of Dresden nostalgia to recover from 'Changes'...

This was a great way to get back into this series after taking a few months off (needed to catch my breath after Changes).

For those who may not know - Side Jobs is NOT a full-length Dresden Files book, it's an accumulation of all of the short stories and novellas Butcher had written in the Dresdenverse up to this point.

I'm not going to review each story (some were as short as 5-6 pages), but suffice it to say I really enjoyed them all. If you've come this far (13 books), then I assume you are a huge fan of everything that makes this series great, which means you'll enjoy them too.

I do want to call attention to a few of the stories that stood out to me, though.

'Restoration of Faith' was great, simply because we finally get our 'When Harry met Murphy' moment. You know you wanted it.

'Backup' was enjoyable, because we finally got a story from the perspective of someone other than Harry - his brother Thomas. It was very interesting/hilarious to see Harry from someone else's perspective. This story also stands out because it details much more about the Oblivion War, something I expect to come much more into play in the following novels.

'The Warrior' was probably my favorite story of them all, but then again I am openly biased towards the Carpenter family. I had been impatiently waiting to find out what happened to Michael following the events of Small Favors, and this story did not disappoint. Many people point to Harry and Thomas's friendship as the best in the series, but my money is always on Harry and Michael. This story was everything that makes Dresden Files my favorite series.

Finally, we have 'Aftermath', which is exactly what it sounds like. It is the story of the first couple of hours after the events at the end of 'Changes', from the perspective of Karrin Murphy. The best part of this story was getting inside Karrin's head (didn't think I could love her more - I was wrong), but honestly the story didn't do much for me. Maybe it will be better once I get Harry's side of things in 'Ghost Story'.

Either way, I would encourage any new reader to NOT skip this book on your way to 'Ghost Story', tempting as it may be. There are some great stories here, and more than anything it justs so nice to enjoy things the way they were before 'Changes', because you know nothing will ever be the same now.

This book (and series) get my highest recommendation.
