Do you remember the first time you heard of the Toyota Prius?

You might have loved or hated the idea of a hybrid car. Either way, shortly after you first heard about the Prius, you probably started seeing them everywhere.

That's what happened to me with the ketogenic diet. And there's a good reason that the ketogenic diet is exploding in popularity.

When I first heard about ketosis, I was eating a high-carb Paleo diet. And I was doing very well on it. I had healed my autoimmune condition and was performing well athletically.

So I was a bit skeptical about keto. After all, how on earth could an athlete ever perform without carbohydrates?

But I just kept hearing about this diet. Every time I listened to a podcast, people were talking about this new anti-inflammatory and ultra-efficient energy source called beta-hydroxybutyrate.

And the people talking about ketosis were people I greatly respected. Tim Noakes got excited about high-fat and ketogenic diets. And then I interviewed the brilliant Dominic D'Agostino for my podcast. What he said blew me away and pushed me over the edge and into a new way of eating. We're now good friends.

I won't say that I'll never go back to eating more carbs. But I can't imagine it right now. I love having more energy than ever and especially being free from constant hunger.

My health is better than ever, and my performance on my bike is amazing. And in my practice, many of my clients also see amazing results from a ketogenic diet.

That's why I love that Louise has created this amazing cookbook. It's a tool that you can use to greatly improve your health and likely lose more than a few pounds if you want.

So what's the secret to ketosis?

Scientists continue to look for a biochemical advantage to being in a state of ketosis, but there may be no huge "secret." Ketogenic diets may work their "magic" for weight loss simply through efficient appetite suppression.

Make no mistake, though - this appetite suppression is an extremely powerful if you want to lose weight. The primary reason people fail on diets is because they get hungry and can't stick to the diet.

And in addition, I often hear from clients (months after they've finished a healingprogram): "I'm in ketosis, and I feel fantastic," they say. Especially the men - menalways seem to do great on ketogenic diets, and by great I mean leaner, stronger and more energetic than ever.

Need the carb count

I like the book and the format, easy to read and nice pictures. BUT I can't use the book to plan meals for the day. Without the carb, protein and fat grams I have no idea what I can eat. I try to keep under 30 carbs a day, so I really need to know how many I have eaten so I can plan my next meal.
If I like a recipe, I use Bing and find it online and hope it has the nutrition information.
I use this book as ideas and inspiration. The strange thing is that on louise's blog she lists the carb, fat and protein for her recipes there maybe they forgot it when the book was printed.

HOW IN THE WORLD can a ketogenic diet cookbook NOT have the amount of carbs, protein and fat in each of the recipes????? Seriously!?

An interesting thing that I noted... each of the many good reviews were within just a few days of each other. Sounds like a marketing scam in the works!

This volume covers the first period, focusing on the political history of the UNITA movement and its struggles with the MPLA.

The Angolan civil war was the product of personal jealousies, contrasting ideologies, and ethnic animosities. From its inception, the conflict between UNITA and Angola’s Marxist government was an international affair involving the U. S., the USSR, China, and many African states: W. Martin James III, who wrote his book near the close of the first period of civil war, contends that despite Gorbachev’s "new thinking" and talk of peaceful solutions to regional conflicts, Soviet policy toward Angola marked a reversion to the Brezhnev Doctrine. The biggest MPLA-Cuban offenses occurred during Gorbachev’s tenure with Soviet advisers at the brigade level directing an MPLA offensive.

American policy toward Angola is also examined here. This is the first book to emphasize the dynamic role of UNITA in the Angolan liberation movement. James acknowledges that the importance of foreign powers in guaranteeing a government of national reconciliation. Just as important are strategies of compromise requiring trust in a political context where it is violated and submission for the common good where defiance is a remnant of the colonial past. Foreign policy analysts, African area specialists, and scholars of post-colonial history find this volume indispensible.

Until it obtained statehood in 1959, however, Alaska remained a colonial possession where the U.S. government controlled access to natural resources on the land, in the water and under the surface. Even now, 41% of the state belongs to national reserves; and the controversies continue among conservationists, fisheries, and timber and oil companies. The chapters on Alaska's environment demonstrate the balance of textbook history and storytelling that makes this informative book so readable. On occasion, Borneman becomes mired in local history, such as the quarrel over the state capital, when he might have instead devoted these pages to the Natives, whom he leaves hovering in the background until they suddenly leap forward as activists in the 1960s. He might also have included illustrations. Mirroring the Alaskan landscape, the book's scale and blocks of unbroken text can be daunting. 10 maps.

An Exhaustive History

Walter R. Borneman's "Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land" delivers exactly what it promises to deliver from its subtitle. The book is a complete history of the 49th State, from prehistoric times until the dawn of the 21st Century. Checking in at 540 pages of narrative, it is as big and daunting as Alaska itself. Though the book could have used more illustrations and perhaps some photographs to assist the reader, Borneman is a good enough storyteller to keep things interesting.
The story begins with a discussion of the migration of native tribes from Siberia during the last ice age. Borneman then flashes forward to Vitus Bering and the first Russian explorations and colonization of the territory. This is then followed by "Seward's Folly," the American purchase of Alaska, which, surprisingly, as Borneman demonstrates was much more widely supported than many historical accounts would indicate. At two cents an acres, it was certainly one of the great bargains of the 19th Century.
Moving into the 20th Century, the story focuses on the Alaskan Gold Rushes and American settlement, the Japanese invasion during World War II, the 1964 earthquake, and finally the production of oil and the resulting envioronmental controversies. Borneman's scope is expansive, and any reader of his book will come away with a very complete knowledge of the history of what remains the last American frontier.
Overall, a comprehensive and well-written account that will be particularly appreciated by history buffs.

Get weaker as the history moves on.....

I thought this book does an excellent job of relating Alaskan history prior to statehood. The impact of Russian America and World War II proves to be well written. After statehood, it seem like only thing that went on in Alaska were related to oil, native land claims and 1964 Earthquake. There were whole lot more that took place in this state during the last 45 years that the book covered. Unfortunately, the author seem to be enamoured with the big headlines subjects in the post statehood period.

A thick book but its quite readable. For people living outside Alaska, this would be an excellent introduction to the Alaska's history. For the local folks like me, first half of the book remains interesting while the latter half appears to be rehashed of newspaper material. It may have been wise if the author stop at statehood and then wrote a second volume since he seem to have a decent flair for writing.

Alaska, Saga of a Bold Land, is an archetype for North American regional history. In an entirely commendable fashion, Walter Borneman has provided the captivating details of a frontier state which remarkably remains so into the 21st century. Plotting the economic victories and upheavals, the natural disasters and wonders, Borneman deftly communicates the intimate details rarely found in such a readable history.
Borneman's view is a balanced one where competing interests are at play. In the ever divisive fight over land use and conservation, Borneman admirably selects the middle ground while patiently explaining the potential impacts upon Alaska's future. Such an objective and, yet, compelling achievement is highly appreciated as was Borneman's excellent asides into local characters and customs. Alaska has been pushed and pulled by outside interests since it's inception as an economic engine. From early Russian fur exploitation to contemporary cruise ship tourism, Alaska, Saga of a Bold Land, is a gem.

Mrs Hargreaves comes to life

I read this book a few months ago. It is sort of a guilty pleasure and an escape from reality. I fully put myself into James' character and found my heart pounding with fear unlike other books where you analyze from a distance. I suggested to my girlfriend that she read the book and the next thing I know she buys 1880 period clothes and boots (Miss Hargreaves), a beautiful chestnut 140 year old bedroom set, a set of Lochgelly tawses from Scotland, a one meter dragon cane, ropes and straps etc. etc!!! She is a very strict school teacher in real life and I think reading this book has brought out the dominate female in her. Well, I go and visit her and she is immaculately dressed with her hair and nails done looking right out of 1880. I am looking at Mrs Hargreaves! I go along for fun or so I thought since we trust and love each other. I find myself bare, tied up in a most compromising way and tawsed senseless as she played Phantom of the Opera. She says it's the most enjoyable and exciting thing she ever did. Annie Bee seems to really knows her stuff because everything she mentioned happened to me. This book has given me mixed feelings, excitement, a really sore backside and a girlfriend who says she has found her inner self.

Exactly what it says!

A very solid corporal punishment book with above average descriptions. Tawes, canes, paddle's and some sex scenes. Although the punishment is the focus. It is primarily F/m and F/f and it contains exactly what the title says. When you break the rules of your rental you get punished at the birching block.

This Book was Made for the Actor or Director

I purchased this book because I am a theatre student and I had to perform a scene out of this play for my acting class.

This book is definitely the "actor's version" of the book, because it has chock-full of stage direction from playwright, which is great if you are interested in how to block your scenes should you be fortunate enough to perform it.

Other than that, the play itself is definitely of an adult nature, the language makes only vague references to sex and prostitution, but still a comedy nonetheless.
