I, like some others, am writing not to complain about the book but the service. The page promotes an edition whose cover says 375 R&B hits and the description says "a hundred and twenty-five hits added to the second edition." Well, naturally I imagined this is what I would be getting but instead I got an edition which has 305 songs and says "over 250 hits". So I got jerked out of 70 songs. It may not seem like that big a deal but it is disappointing and it is, to some extent, false advertising.

You need airforce pilot eyesight to use this!

I played a few of the songs on guitar, and the chords seem correct but could they make the type any smaller? I don't think so! If you don't have the music right up close and with good lighting, a person (especially over 40!) can't hope to be able to enjoy using this book.

I was very disappointed--great selection of songs, but no hope to be able to use the book in a party environment.

One-Stop R&B

I've had this book over two years, and I've had lots of fun working my way through it (as well as jamming with friends). It's packed cover-to-cover not only with Stax and Motown songs, but also a lot of 70s soul and late 1950s rock. Virtually every big hit by Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, and the Supremes are here along with a lot of Otis Redding, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and the Jackson 5ive. I've found the arrangements are pretty accurate, and it's a lot cheaper buying the songs this way rather than in some other formats. This would be an ideal book to have if you are in a wedding or party band and are expected to know and play a dozen or so classic R & B songs.

There are a couple of caveats. First - this is fake book format. Fake books give you the chords and leads on a staff, but the rest of the song is up to you. Professional gigging musicians constantly 'fake' arrangements, and this should not be a problem if you are jamming to these songs. Second - Hal Leonard seems to have wanted to cram in as many songs as possible, limiting the songs to just one or two pages. This means the print is small, and will be especially irritating in a dim room. Third - there's no TAB for guitar. Normally I wouldn't complain about that, but when you're dealing with so many songs with tasty guitar parts, a little TAB would have helped.

Still, this is a great treasury of great songs. Anyone who grew up with Motown and Stax and who plays an instrument will love this one. Furthermore, there seems to be less overlap between this book and other Hal Leonard volumes than other collections I've seen, so there's a lot of value for the money.

As luck would have it, I ran into Trent Mandrake one day as I was walking and after a brief conversation, I informed him of his child. His reaction was the absolute worst and after the uncomfortable encounter, he handed me a business card and informed me that he wanted me to have a paternity test done and then we could handle things from there. After the test, he made it clear that he didn’t want anything to do with us but would help out financially and that was better than nothing at this point, but I wanted my son to have his father. I wondered if there were any way that Trent and I could ever make some sort of relationship possible and the more that I saw him, the more I wanted to be near him. Could things between the rich and arrogant philanthropist ever work out or would I always just be another bill that he had to pay? Could we ever find that spark that we had on the night we met or was I doomed to want him from afar and be doomed to forever just be nothing more than his son’s mother?

What an amazing story. I couldn't put it down

What an amazing story. I couldn't put it down. The writing ability made me feel like I was back in that era. The words are so descriptive I could see clearly see each character and every place she described. And, oh yeah. The sex has a way of weaving so much story into an act that's so hot that I wasn't sure if I was more turned on.

In the beginning and middle of the story, I thought that Karen ended up being a single mother and her son Christopher can't be with his father. I like how Karen handle the whole situation, even though she struggled a lot, but she never give up. She shows of being a strong woman that can handle anything and tried everything works.

A MUST FOR STUDENTS OF ROMAN ART

Profusely illustrated with both color and b&w photographs, this is one of the very best books on Roman art that I have ever read. Divided into 7 chapters, each of which is like a separate in depth essay dealing with a particular aspect of Roman art, Zanker writes in clear understandable prose with an emphasis on imagery and appearances. The first chapter in particular ("A New Art Based on Greek Forms") sets the tone for the entire book. Zanker's analysis of the relationship between Roman art and culture and Greek art and culture is the one of the most incisive discussions of this subject yet to be presented. The how and the why of the origins and evolution of Roman art are clearly put forward. As a bonus, one also gains a greater understanding of the Hellenistic period and its art. Chapter 2 - "The Representation of Power and Prestige: Conflicting Images" - continues Zanker's discussion of the relationship between Hellenistic culture and Republican and early Imperial Rome. His conclusion is that "[t]ogether with the Age of Augustus, it was the most creative period of Roman art (150 B.C.-A.D. 14)". While some might disagree, there is no denying what was accomplished during this time period: Architectural advancements for both the city of Rome and its empire were enormous. The Rome that we think of was born during the reign of the Emperor Augustus. Public art and the final absorption of Classical Greek images into the vocabulary of Roman art flourished at this time along with the "realistic" Republican portrait which emphasized a person's physiognomy and individual uniqueness. Chapter 3 - "Imagages of Power and World Order in the Empire" - further develops several of the themes disussed in the previous chapter. In addition, there are key discussions of "historical reliefs", "Imperial imagery", and "Official Art as 'Propaganda'". I don't completely agree with Zanker's iconographic conclusions pertaining to the Augustus from Prima Porta and regret his failure to commit to a specific date for the creation of this most notable and controversial work of sculpture. The remaining chapters include: "The Roman House as Theater of the Joys of Life" (4), containing beautiful color photographs of domestic paintings and a variety of vessels; "Tomb and Self-Image" (5) - highlighted by b&w photos of the tomb of Eurysaces the baker; "Rome and the Empire" (6) which contains a broad discussion of the various types and styles of art that permeated the Empire. A section on "The Ruler-Cult and the Image of the Emperor" is especially important; "Toward Late Antiquity" (7) succinctly focuses on the changing image of the Roman Emperor from Antoninus Pius (138-161AD) to Constantine (ca. 312AD).

The Bibliography is somewhat skimpy (as is the Index) and omits some key references to Brendel, Brilliant, Elsner, Hanfmann, Kahler, L'Orange, Strong, and Toynbee. But I won't quibble.
